The speed limit on the Long Island Expressway is still 55 mph. This is an outrage. The speed limit used to be 65 mph. This was changed in 1973 when the Federal Government passed a law limiting the speed limit on all interstate highways to 55 mph. In 1993, the Federal Government removed the 55 mph limit and let the states decide what the limit would be. Just about all the states have raised the speed limit on their Interstate highways to at least 65 mph. Yet the Long Island Expressway, which was designed for fast speeds, is still at 55 mph. This allows highway patrol units in both Nassau and Suffolk Counties to set up speed traps and give people unwarranted tickets for "speeding". In 2003, New York state passed a law allowing the State Transportation Department to increase the speed limit on highways at their discretion. Enough already. Let all people who use the L.I.E. drive a reasonable and prudent speed without having highway patrol treat us like little children. Driving 65-75 mph and an Interstate highway is reasonable and prudent. After all, they were modeled after the German Autobahn, which of course has no speed limit.
