United Irishmen Day |
To: Irish GovernmentWe, the undersigned, ask that the Government of Ireland pay due recognition to the heroes of the United Irishmen movement who in 1798 rose valiantly against the oppression of the British colonial rule in the name of all Irish people, be they Protestant, Catholic or Dissenter.
In honour of these fine people, whose vision for Ireland is more relevant and necessary today than ever, we request that the Government replace the June bank holiday with a National day of celebration in their honour.
We propose that this United Irishmen day be held on May 24th of each year, or on the nearest Monday to that date, and that it be acknowledged as a national holiday for all residents of Ireland.Sincerely,
