Wasteful Paper Consumption by Bucknell Student Government |
To: Bucknell Student Government
We, the Undersigned, are Bucknell students that are concerned about the recent removal of an important and effective green policy for the Bucknell Student Government (BSG) Appropriations Committee.
Last year, the BSG Vice President of Finance required student clubs and organizations to project their budget requests onto a screen at Appropriations Committee meetings, rather than print out 16 copies for each of the Appropriations Committee members. There are over 150 clubs and organizations on campus; requiring each club to print out 16 copies would, therefore, total about 4,800 pages if each club and organization submitted a two-page budget request. The paper conservation program reduced the number of pages to 0.
The current Executive Board, however, reverted to the previous paper-reliant process as they believe that it is more fiscally responsible to have the information directly in front of them, rather than projected onto a screen. They assume that the green policy caused them to briefly misplace $53,000 rather than acknowledge their own error. They also fail to see that this excessive use of paper is ultimately far more wasteful, both financially and ecologically, than a one-time mishap caused by human mistakes.
The current Executive Board was elected on a platform which included green policy components. The Board members should be held accountable to their platform and continue the paper conservation program. In light of the critical environmental challenges currently confronting human society, policies such as these are more important than ever.
With this petition, we ask the Bucknell Student Government (BSG) to use as little paper as possible, in both the Appropriations process and all other meetings.
Sincerely,
