Stop Declawing of Shelter Cats |
To: FCAC, Commissioners, Companion Animal Welfare Advisory CommitteeFrederick County Animal Control in Frederick, Maryland (FCAC) is currently considering changing the portion of its adoption contract which forbids the declawing of cats.
Despite the fact that all of the leading humane organizations in America have policies against declawing, and despite the fact that it is outlawed in many countries (Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Spain, and many more), the Shelter Director is still considering this change.
Declawing is very cruel and inhumane. If you don't understand why, please visit these links. WARNING: Graphic and not for the weak of heart.

Not only is declawing extremely cruel, it can also cause behavioral problems in cats. Because of these behavioral problems, many of these cats are surrendered back to shelters AFTER they are adopted and then declawed. According to PETA, declawed cats are much more likely to be surrendered to shelters. The people that have put their cats through this horrible ordeal refuse to deal with the behavioral changes that THEY caused, then they surrender their pets back to the shelters. Which means adoption returns skyrocket.
We are asking that you please sign this petition if you oppose the declawing of cats.
This petition will be presented to the shelter director, the board of commissioners in Frederick, and to the Companion Animal Welfare Advisory Committee. This is a committee that looks into any complaints from the public and who works with the shelter to make things better for the shelter pets.
Thank you very much.
Sincerely,
