Fans against My Chemical Romance Lawsuit at University Of Maine in Orono, ME |
To: University Of Maine in Orono Student GovernmentMy Chemical Romance was scheduled to play at the University of Maine in Orono, ME on Oct 27th. On Oct 25th during the opening for Bon Jovi at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ Bob Bryar, drummer of My Chemical Romance, reportedly broke his wrist. My Chemical Romance cancelled the 10/27 show that same night. On Oct 26th they again opened for Bon Jovi at the Prudential Center, however according to people who attended the show they cut it short. Then showed up in Bratislava, Slovakia for their 10/30 show with a replacement for Bob Bryar.
The only way for MCR to legally cancel the 10/27 show was an "Act Of God" clause. Stating if someone got hurt and they could not play it relieved both parties of the contract. Bob having a broken wrist would qualify under this clause. However where MCR did play a 20-30 minute set on 10/26 the Student Government feels that was a breech of the contract and is now trying to sue My Chemical Romance saying there was no injuries that would stop them from playing an entire hour and a 1/2 set because they were able to play a short set in New Jersey which they had to play to avoid a lawsuit thru the prudential center. (talk about damned if you do...)
Obviously if My Chemical Romance is overseas with a replacement drummer they weren't lying about the injury. But regardless of all of this, student government for the University have sent letters to My Chem demanding $20,500 be sent to them by Nov. 12th or they will file a lawsuit against My Chemical Romance.
Derek Mitchell, the vice president of student entertainment for the University of Orono had the following to say on the campus website:
"This whole situation means that there's not going to be a concert this semester. We are going to replace it in the spring," Mitchell said. "We'll plan another major concert of similar stature to My Chemical Romance, probably not the same genre." This means that there will be two concerts in the spring semester. "It just isn't practical to get something done this semester."
My Chemical Romance did offer to reschedule at a mutually convenient date, but Mitchell declined. "It is an educational experience. Going through this kind of gives us things that we need to look out for in the future."
This petition is to tell this University that My Chemical Romance is NOT their guinea pig or a class room field day. My Chem did have to cancel but they've always made it up to us. They cancelled back in 2004 when the Way brother's father had a heart attack, they rescheduled and came back and played an awesome show. They had to cancel May 6th when the whole crew and 3 of the band members got food poisioning. They are rescheduling this show. If given the chance they would have rescheduled the Orono show...THEY OFFERED and yet the college refused making it appear as though they were saying it was a good learning experience for their students to sue My Chem instead. While on the same hand promising big acts in the future. If I was a big act seeing how this act is being treated I'd have NOTHING to do with this college. Good Luck with that.
This petition is for the Maine fans who feel it's unfair that this college is making us look like horrible fans. If it "only takes one person" then let this be the counter action to that one person. Bob Bryar has been burned to film videos for us, he gotten gangrene, partial facial paralysis and almost brain damage and he STILL carried on for us. Trying to escape emergency rooms to go play shows. If Bob can't play you KNOW it's serious.
Please sign this petition if you believe this is an unfair treatment of a band they feel they can turn into a classroom experience while making the Maine fanbase look horrible.
Please if you have comments to add please keep them civil and respectful. I know MCR fans can be over protective but threats and fans lashing out in anger will not be tolerated. We are all upset but I ask you to be mature about this.
All My Love
