Michael Sungman Cho was shot and killed by the police in La Habra, California at approximately 2:00 PM on December 31st, 2007. According to news reports, the police said that Cho was holding a tire iron and that he "made a motion as if he were going to attack." There were only two police officers on the scene and both police officers shot at Cho.
What current news articles have failed to mention is the fact that Michael had a disability and was unable to walk properly, let alone run or attack. We, the undersigned, want to know why the police officers felt so threatened by Michael that they had to shoot him instead of using Tasers or bean bags or pepper spray. In addition, not only did the two La Habra police officers shoot at Michael (who was not armed with a gun), they shot him multiple times.
His friends, family, UCLA professor and church pastor all vouch for Michael Cho's exceptional character. A loving and caring soul, Mike taught blind and disabled children art. Those who knew Michael Cho will tell you of his good-natured, philanthropic heart. The declaration of Michael Cho's outstanding character along with the fact that his handicap made him physically incapable of charging at someone, serious questions are raised regarding the excessive force used upon this remarkable individual.
We believe that it is the responsibility of the Department of Justice to thoroughly investigate this incident. There exists a possibility of receiving an incomplete or biased local investigation. To ensure that this case is able to obtain fair and unbiased treatment, we are asking for a prompt federal investigation.
Thank you for your attention to this very important matter.
