Stop Daylight Saving Time in Minnesota

To:  The Minnesota Legislature

We, the undersigned, hereby petition the Minnesota Legislature and Governor of Minnesota, Tim Pawlenty, to support and pass a law to stop the observance of Daylight Saving Time in Minnesota as allowed by the Uniform Time Act of 1966 (15 U.S. Code Section 260a).

We believe the switch to Daylight Saving Time during the summer months is an unnecessary disruption to everyone’s life. It is a detriment to farmers, whose schedule is tied to the daylight. It causes unnecessary stress in captive animals such as pets or livestock that have their feeding schedules changing at seemingly random times.

The change to wake up an hour earlier in the spring affects everyone’s sleep schedule. The loss of an hour can be tied to an increase in accidents due to loss of sleep, not to mention the abrupt change in the amount of light during morning or evening rush hours. For some people with sleep disorders or who are on a strict schedule for medication it can be more than an inconvenience, it can be extremely hard to cope with, and adversely affect one’s health.

One of the main reasons we switch to Daylight Saving Time is to save energy. While it may save households a small amount (about 1%), the majority of indoor offices, factories, warehouses and other facilities all use artificial light and other energy during daylight business hours. This is the bulk of energy usage, and it is unaffected by Daylight Saving Time.

We also believe this is a chance for Minnesota to set an example for other remaining areas in the country to stop this practice as well. It is time to stop falling back!
