To Kill a Classic? |
To: Nova Scotian School BoardWe the people plead for the ability to teach one of the greatest novels of our time, "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee.
The Nova Scotian school system has recently banned said book from being taught in all Nova Scotian schools due to some racist language (despite how it is used in proper context). We find this is not only unfair, but downright oppressive to students from all walks of life no matter the colour of their skin, their age, or anything else along those lines.
Not only does the novel have an overall positive moral, but it proves to be a good piece of history to be able to look back at to understand to some extent the goings on at the time in the area the story is told in. This story stands as a great lesson for civil rights and justice for all.
We are standing up for our right -and someday our children’s right- to read an amazing piece of literature that teaches us many valuable lessons and gives us insight into the past.
We deserve this right.Sincerely,
