Petition to Monroe County Supervisors RE: Poultry CAFO's

We, the undersigned, as citizens of Monroe County, Mississippi do hereby petition the Monroe County Board of Supervisors to amend the county ordinance regulating the siting of large scale swine operations (Confined Animal Feeding Operations - CAFO's) to include poultry CAFO's.



This petition in a short summary is as follows:



As concerned citizens of Monroe County, Mississippi, we are in favor of amending the existing Monroe County Swine Ordinance. This ordinance currently states that swine CAFO's be built at least 1½ miles from the nearest occupied dwelling. The Department of Environmental Quality allows poultry CAFO's to be built as close as 800 feet from an occupied dwelling unless a County Ordinance says it should be further. 

This petition should be signed by those who are in favor of including poultry CAFO's in the existing swine ordinance. Amending this ordinance would mean that poultry CAFO's could not be built closer than 1½ miles (7,920 feet) from any Monroe County resident's home.
