Dear Husband on Strike and the Signatories of his Petition,

We the undersigned are Mothers and Fathers and Babies and their Families who believe that the best place for young humans to sleep is snuggled up close to their mothers. Whether you call it the family bed or co-sleeping or sleep sharing, it’s been practiced throughout history by most of the people on this planet, the children of our culture deserve no less. You see, babies are born expecting that their needs –for breastmilk, heat, comfort, security, touch- in a word their MOTHER be met 24 hours a day. Humans need this sense of safety and love even-perhaps especially-at night, when the world is a dark and frightening place. You are an adult and you want to sleep beside someone, why should a young child be any different?

To the erroneous claim that babies need to be taught independence we say, “NO, that’s simply not true.” Babies don’t learn independence by neglect, fear, banishment, shame or abuse. They learn to be independent when they have a strong foundation of love and security and the unconditional love of their family.

To the specious threat that a baby in the bed destroys a marriage we say, “Are you kidding me?” When did selfish desires ever make a marriage stronger? When the adults of the family decide to conceive a child it is expected that they will nurture and care for the baby, help it to survive and achieve optimal growth. Of course it is a challenge to stay romantic and desirous when you are so engrossed in the care of an infant. Of course it would be easier if the baby wouldn’t be so demanding. But when we are challenged, and rise to the occasion, that’s when our marriages become perfect unions.
