Students come to Manipal University and study here from 2 to 5 years. Many of the students are talented when it comes to music but their interests and talents go waste in this town because there are no provisions from the university that encourage music. There are have been some really good bands in Manipal but the maximum level of exposure they get is Campus Rock Idols, an annual event organised by DNA Networks where bands compete with each other. Other platforms include annual college fests held by colleges in Manipal. In all these occasions Manipal bands are expected to compete with bands from Bangalore or Chennai which is terribly unfair because of the insufficient facilities for bands to practice and the lack of encouragement from the university. Just as sports and theatre are given a lot of importance in the university, so should music. And in the same context, all music must be appreciated with the same effort. For the enhancement of original music in Manipal, we request the university to provide students with a jamroom equipped with a drumkit and amplifiers that they can use. The use of the jamroom may be monitored so it be divided equally between all the existing bands. Also, this be available to the students at less or no fee.
