NASCAR: Do not lock up the NASCAR video game rights...again !!! |
To: NASCARNASCAR
In 2003, you gave EA Sports the exclusive rights to make NASCAR video games for the next 6 years. The time is almost up and we are urging you NOT to extend the deal with EA Sports or with ANYONE. Giving the exclusive rights to any one company is a bad idea for both consumers and yourselves.
There are two types of (NASCAR games:
Computer (PC)- Realistic simulations. Intended for people who want a serious NASCAR game such as Dale Earnhardt Jr., Denny Hamlin, Martin Truex, Chad Coleman, Carl Edwards, and others including race fans who want to experience the closest thing to real NASCAR.
Console (Nintendo, Playstation, etc)- These games are usually simple, easy, and totally unrealistic. Players can crash into a wall and flip upside down and keep driving. Though fun for most people, These games will not satisfy the hard-core fan looking for the ultimate experience.
In the 5 years since their exclusive license, EA Sports has released several console NASCAR games but only ONE for the computer. And most people would agree that it was not very good. The game didn't sell many copies. In fact, the game (NASCAR Sim Racing) can be purchased online for as low as $10. However, Sierra's NASCAR Racing 2003 Season, no longer in production, can be found online approaching $400. That was the last NON-EA Sports game.
So here we are in 2008 and the most recent NASCAR game was made in 2005. The most popular NASCAR game is from 2003.
But what sucks the most is that no other company could step up to make a new Computer NASCAR game because only EA Sports has that right.
It is wrong to grant the video game rights exclusively to one developer. If you keep the rights open to everyone, you could make more money from many developers. EA Sports only bought out the license because they know that they could not compete with other NASCAR games so they eliminated the competition. It was really about GREED. The deal benefited no one. Not us fans, not even you. It would NOT benefit you to extend the exclusive rights to a developer that only released ONE computer game in this entire time.
If you are going to extend the license to EA Sports, then we ask you to please ONLY let it be for console games. Please do NOT let them lock up the rights to make computer games since it will only be a waste. At least leave the rights to make computer NASCAR games open to everyone. I'm sure Dale Earnhardt Jr., Denny Hamlin, and Carl Edwards, and us fans :) would appreciate it if you did.Sincerely,
