To:  The Hon. Kevin Andrews, MP, Minister for Immigration and Citizenship

We the undersigned are extremely disappointed that the Australian government has refused to resettle in Australia the 72 Sri Lankans found to be refugees and who have now been detained on Nauru for over six months.

As a signatory to the 1951 UN Refugee Convention, Australia now has a moral and a legal obligation towards these refugees, to act in accordance with the letter and the spirit of the Convention by offering them protection.

We are outraged that this group of refugees will remain in indefinite detention on Nauru and in limbo while the Government seeks a third country to accept Australia's responsibility to resettle them. It is well documented that prolonged detention often results in serious psychological and physical damage.

We call on the government to resettle these refugees in Australia as soon as possible and uphold Australia's standing as a country that respects international obligations and duties.

We also urge that the refugee claims of the remaining caseload on Nauru are resolved speedily with thorough and fair processing.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned
