We, the undersigned, are concerned about the release of students' personal information to military recruiters under Clause 9528 of the federal No Child Left Behind Act. Under this clause, public high schools are required to release students' names, addresses, phone numbers and other personal information to the military, or risk losing federal funding. Students and families have the right to opt-out of having their information released, but few know of this option. Worse, many do not know their information can be released in the first place!

We call on you, Jon Corzine, to use your power as Governor to take action on this very important issue of student privacy, either through executive order or by putting pressure on the New Jersey State Board of Education to adopt a uniform policy for high schools throughout the state. New Jersey would be the first state to take such an action. A uniform policy is essential to ensure that all New Jersey high school students have the same opportunity to protect their privacy by opting-out of Clause 9528, regardless of their personal socioeconomic status or that of their school district.
