Enquiry into Marineland

To:  All

Orcas are highly intelligent animals with very strong family ties and structures. Wild female orcas may live up to 80 years or more in the wild and males may live to 50 or 60. On the 1st of August 2004, Neocia, a 12-year-old female died at Marineland in Ontario, Canada. Neocia had performed alone from the other orcas of the park in a tiny tank for years. Her mother, father and other companions live in another part of the park. This is the fourth Orca death in the last five years at Marineland.

Marineland has held a total of 18 orcas and of those individuals, only four remain. It is likely that Hudson, the youngest orca, will take Neocia’s place in performing shows in the same tank, shared with the same dolphins and walruses in an indoor theatre.

This petition calls for an enquiry into the conditions of Marineland and answers as to why these orcas are dying so frequently at such a young age. This is unprecedented within the world of orcas in captivity.

With your signature, I hope a difference can be made.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned
