To:  Summit Entertainment

We, the undersigned, as fans of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Series would like to express our concerns over making the follow-up movie New Moon on a limited budget. The success of the first film should surely indicate to the filmmakers that legions of fans will be eagerly anticipating the sequel, and as before the desire for a complete film experience based on the beloved, best-selling novels is surely in evidence.

In a recent Entertainment Weekly article on the success of the first film, Erik Feig, President of Production, of Summit Entertainment was quoted as saying, “I don’t think there was anything excessively lavish about Twilight, and yet the world was fully realized…”. He goes on to say, “We’ll do exactly the same thing with New Moon”. It is known that the director of the first film, Catherine Hardwick, had a bit of a hard time working with the limited budget provided to her for use on all the stunt work and special effects required to pull off a fantasy movie. While we feel she did a fantastic job with what she had to work with, we too feel that in order to make a proper adaptation of New Moon the budget needs to be increased exponentially.

There are many sequences in the second book of the series that will need to be examined closely in relation to bringing it to life on the big screen. A few examples include:

•Finding a way to “grow” actor Taylor Lautner (who plays Jacob Black) into a full grown 25 year old from beginning to end of the film, without replacing the actor or making it look unrealistic.

•Successfully pulling of the onscreen werewolf transformation of 5 characters.

•Location shoots in Italy.

•Stunt work involving cliff diving, car racing, and combat.

•Improving the look of the “sparkle” effect on the vampires.

With a limited budget, these fantastical circumstances which are pivotal to the story line, will be very tricky and may run the risk of looking “cheesy” if done improperly.

We are also concerned that due to budgetary and time constraints we will lose some of the portions of the book that are important to and well-versed in by the fans. It may be beneficial to make the film lengthier to include as much of the book as possible. This has been done with many successful movie franchises based on novels and the audience does not dwindle because of it. Including more of the story that fans all over the world have grown so attached to, can only serve to help the film franchise. By leaving out key scenes from the book, you run the risk of alienating the fans, thereby decreasing word of mouth advertising and ticket sales when the film opens.

This being said, we the undersigned, support the production of New Moon and hope that Summit Entertainment and its affiliates will take this into consideration, and increase the budget for the film.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned
