Endorse Letter Protesting 49er's Racist/Homophobic Video

The undersigned are outraged by the training video produced by San Francisco 49ers staff that was first shown to players in August of 2004. The video is demeaning to women, people of color, immigrants, the Asian and Pacific Islander community, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community, and the City and County of San Francisco. It demonstrates the need for a dramatic shift and comprehensive approach to promoting civil rights and acceptance as core team values.

Stating that content of the video was “never cleared by any officer of the organization” is not enough. Officers for the corporation should have been monitoring the full content of the team’s training program.

As San Francisco’s NFL team, and as role models to our City’s youth, the 49ers must take concrete steps to demonstrate their commitment to the values of our city. We ask that you:

o Meet with leaders from the civil rights community, including the women’s community, the Asian and Pacific Islander community, and the LGBT community.
o Outline clear policies and timely accountability at every level of the organization around discrimination and harassment.
o Visibly connect themselves to the communities they attacked and make amends for the harm that’s been inflicted.
