Ban Alcohol in Kashmir

We,

The People and Civil Society of Jammu and Kashmir,

make the following petition to the Government of our state:

1. We demand that the sale, production, importation or use of alcohol or any other noxious intoxicant be immediately prohibited by law. We demand that the Government take steps to crack down on the importation of alcoholic drinks, target bootleggers and smugglers, and educate the youth about the harmful effects of drinking alcohol.

2. We take strong exception to the Government's decision to authorise the opening of new liquor shops in Srinagar. We demand that this decision be revoked forthwith. We request the Government to bring in a new policy intended to outlaw alcoholic drinks, eliminate drunkenness and the evils that it spawns, and to obviate the loss to the State's economy that arises from our importation of alcoholic products from outside. The only way this can be done is to promulgate a zero-tolerance policy for alcohol.

3. We call upon the Government to uphold the common values of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, regardless of faith, ethnicity or creed. All the religious communities of the state - Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, etc - are agreed on the need to curb waywardness and moral corruption. It is therefore imperative on the Government, in the light of this moral consensus, to take the lead in promoting the common public morality of our state.

4. Therefore, we demand that all establishments selling liquor be shut down, that the sale, use, importation or production of intoxicating drinks be banned, and that swift and determined action be taken against bootleggers and other enemies of society who are engaged in the enterprise of moral corruption.
