More than 26 million egg-laying hens are crammed into tiny wire (battery) cages in Canada every year. They are given less space than a sheet of writing paper, barely enough room to move let alone flap even one wing. Their feathers chafe off from rubbing on each other or the bars of their cage. Kept in almost complete darkness for one to two years, their only escape is when they are transported to slaughter or killed on farm for compost.
