Support 2008 Olympics |
To: President George W. Bush and the U.S. governmentWe, the undersigned, protest the idea of boycotting the Olympics that has been spreading throughout the globe like a wildfire; our presidential candidates are even jumping on the bandwagon. Our reasons are as following:
1. Tibet is NOT a reason to boycott the Beijing Olympics 08. On the most superficial level, the violent happenings in Tibet are reasons to condemn China, but probing deeper into the matter shows a drastically different story. For example, the picture depicting Chinese soldiers beating Tibetans is blatantly misinterpreted. One glance at the clothing style and skin color of the Chinese soldiers reveals that the soldiers are actually from Nepal. This is only one example among hundreds or even possibly thousands of misinterpreted coverage used against China.
2. Boycotting the Olympics has no real impact. In 1980, the US, Japan, Canada and several other countries boycotted the Moscow Olympics. The only losers, critics said, were the athletes who lost what may have been their only chance to play the Olympics. As a result, critics said, and athletes concurred, Olympians should never be used again for political leverage.
3. The Olympics are only recreational in nature. It has no further impact than to educate people about foreign cultures and have fun. Political issues should have no relation whatsoever with the Olympics.
4. Chinese people number about 1.29533 billion (about 22% of total population in the world) and yet, China has never held the Olympics before.
5. In the past century, China has made progress with its government, going from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional republic and bringing benefits to its citizens, fulfilling the Olympic criteria and expectance out of a host country.
6. China gives Tibet billions of RMB each year for area development. Only as a part of the rising global superpower that is China can Tibet have any significant recognition in the world.
Therefore, we the undersigned strongly urge that the government of the United States of America NOT boycott the Beijing 2008 Olympics. Also, we request that the US government investigate further into this issue and not make remarks showing no insight or perspective.Sincerely,
