One Piece is a series that has proven itself to have inherent mainstream appeal to people of all-ages. It is a show filled with action, adventure, drama, deep character development, humor, a unique art-style, suspense, a wonderfully epic musical score, and most importantly, heart. The series has already taken Japan by storm with millions of fans, record-breaking manga sales and television ratings, and billions in merchandise sales. It has been a mainstream phenomenon in its native country, and for the fans there's an undeniable appeal to the series like none other. One Piece is truly a modern classic that stands alongside other popular action-adventure cartoons such as Dragonball Z and Avatar: the Last Airbender.

As of now, One Piece has already been released in America with limited success. However, it is also a common sentiment among many fans that the main reason for its lack of success is the English dub produced by 4Kids. This particular adaptation is notorious among many people for it's terrible direction in acting and writing. This dub not only turned off previously established fans, but also alienated many viewers who otherwise may have enjoyed the series. It left many people with a bad first impression and left them not wanting to watch the cartoon.

Fortunately it had a large fanbase of the Japanese original version, and after 4Kids' cancellation One Piece was quickly re-licensed by FUNimation, the company responsible for adapting hit anime like Dragonball Z and Fullmetal Alchemist for English-speaking audiences. This new dub was embraced by fans and enjoyed much more successful DVD sales that continue to this day, in comparison to underwhelming sales of the 4Kids DVDs. One Piece also has a successful Internet streaming broadcast on FUNimation's video player (where they currently air each new episode one hour after it airs in Japan) and on Hulu, and is one of the top-viewed animated shows on both venues. If One Piece were to air on T.V. again from the beginning using the new FUNimation dub, we believe it would enjoy much greater success.

"One Piece" is a series that appeals across a wide age-range. However, we feel that as in Japan, One Piece would find the most success with boys aged 9-14, and/or 12-17, which would make it best suited for a kids' programming block. One Piece has classic but deep themes of accomplishing dreams, never giving up, and growing up. It is known for its heavy emotional draw, and unlike most cartoons it's not uncommon for One Piece to make fans cry. Many characters in the show have a tragic past, and it's when they are able to overcome their burdens and obstacles through the help of their friends that the series truly shines. All this is wrapped in a package full of intense fight scenes and animated comedy.
