MURDERED AND MISSING WOMEN INQUIRY
WHEREAS Wally Oppal, Commissioner of Missing Women Inquiry:
defended the police investigation of Robert Pickton, calling it exhaustive;
argued against the establishment of a public inquiry, calling it expensive and saying it could drag on forever and ever;
was Attorney General when the Criminal Justice Branch did not proceed with 20 remaining murder charges and defended that decision publicly, months before he was appointed;
has many personal relationships with people in the Criminal Justice Branch, government and police, some of whom are extremely likely to be witnesses;
ran in the last three provincial elections as a Liberal candidate and is reasonably seen to be politically partisan;
AND WHEREAS despite all of the above-listed factors, Wally Oppal was appointed as Commissioner of the Murdered and Missing Women inquiry;
THEREFORE we, the undersigned, declare that we have no confidence in Wally Oppal or the current Inquiry process.
AND THEREFORE, we call on the current Solicitor General to replace Wally Oppal as Commissioner. We also demand an inquiry process, including decisions about the Commissioner, to be community-driven, for the community in the DTES and by the community in the DTES.
