We as concerned citizens call upon the Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs to act without delay upon the concerns in Attawapiskat.

Toxic fumes are being released into the airways of children and families due to a decades-old oil spill that hasn't been cleaned up and taken care of by the government of Canada.

The Conservative government has ignored these problems and the issues that the people of Attawapiskat have to face on a daily basis.

Many children are suffering physical symptoms because of the fumes emitted from the waste.

Upon signing this petition you are showing your concerns for the people of Attawapiskat having to deal with the issues alone and urging the Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs, Chuck Strahl, to take immediate action in resolving these issues, including a public apology to the community of Attawapiskat for the governments lack of timely response on this issue of social justice.

    • The way this community is being addressed maks me think that not much has changed since Prime Minister Harper apologized to the people affected by the residential schools debacle.

    • Just about a week ago an excavator was digging up a broken water main that was about 50ft near the southeast side of the old school site which the kindergarden and grades 1 to 3 classes were, you can smell the fumes as the machine was digging out bucket by bucket of contaminated clay.

    • What is happening to the Attawapiskat Nation is inhuman. Something needs to be done FAST! My trust in our government is going down hill. I cannot believe that our counrty will fight for other counties well being but not protect our own.

    • Lying to the Aboriginal people in Attawapiskat is no right. They were promised a school almost 10 years ago and haven't seen one bit of anything for them being done. I strongly strongly want the children in Attwapiskat to have a good education because ever kid deserves one no matter what race they are!

    • It's absolutely disgraceful that the people of Attawapiskat have had to live with this oilspill for so long and it's a national shame as well. The children up there need a new school, a REAL building, where they can learn and better themselves, just like any other kids.

    • Why does it take 10 yrs to ask for a new elemtary school for students in Attawapiskat, and it only took a year for the government to approve and build a billion dollar diamond mine just off Attawapiskat.

    • This has to stop! These people are citizens of one the world's greatest countries too. Is this how Canada treats individuals that need our help and support? Why are we spending millions of taxpayer dollars in other parts of the world and absolutely nothing in communities like Attawapiskat?

    • The conditions in Attawapiskat are deplorable, not due to the people themselves but due to the inadequate action of the Federal Government. It is time to step up to the plate and give back these citizens their right to live. All starting with giving them the funding they need.

    • http://www.cbc.ca/video/news/audioplayer.html?clipid=2172162604 no running water, buckets for toilets, many with no heating or plumbing. The conditions are so bad there is a state of emergency for a long time moved out of traditional communictes into reserves in remote areas they would not have chosen but put there just to be close to the shipping and northern affairs cost of shipping gods to them these days means a substandard home can cost $250,000 by the time it gets there so 80 million goes pretty quick when you think of all the elevated costs involved to maintain health costs and nurse practitioners, educators, school portables that have to be maintained outstanding debt from previous flood evacuations they are in debrfrom people in the south think they can live with the same or less money than those in the south but most are not aware of the incredible costs to maintain these remote infrastructures. The federal government throws money ar it over and over again. In the meantime, there is not enoubh economic deversity to self sustain so it is a cycle that is designed to repeat over and over again. Let's give what was promised in the beginning traditional territories not protected land anaccess or decision making supposed to get profit shares and resources fishing licenses put bak i their names versus tour guides debeedrs made 500,mil and giave 10 mill, imposed lifestyle in the north that is imposed on them , land based to cash based economies, not meeting expectations because its like sending southerneers into the north - - to survive, you firtst have to learn the protocols and what is necessary,. generations still damaged from residential schools abuse with little support to remember cultrual identiry, give equip and trades taught there versus bringing people in, educators from south cant teach as well as needed as teachers don't have the resources, bc and queb are examples... also trying to accomodate a new way of life w\o resources
