We, the undersigned, want freedom to express who we are in the workplace. Many jobs discriminate against ones hair color, piercings, tattoos, or style of dress. Why is it that this has been tolerated for so long? Why is it that we, as Americans, don't have the right to express who we are?
Many jobs have 'dress codes' that dictate restrictions on expression, such as hair colors. They claim it is unprofessional to have blue, green, pink, etc hair. Why? How is it any different than any other hair color? Because it isn't natural? How is someone who was born a blond but dyes their hair black any different? It is bold, and unnatural. How is a color that is okay to wear on clothing or accessories not okay to have on your hair? Logically, it just doesn't make sense. It all comes down to prejudice and close-minded teachings and rules.
All we want is the freedom to be who we are, and have a job at the same time.
What we want is the same rights granted to others under the EOE (http://www.eeoc.gov/). Jobs that don't discriminate against race, sex, creed, religion, color, or national origin should not have the right to discriminate against us on OUR alternative lifestyle. The way we choose to live our life and appear in public does not change our qualifications or our ability to do the work assigned.
Please, change this barbaric society and allow decent, hardworking people to earn a living while not having to sacrifice who they are. After all the things Americans have overcome, there is still a lot of work to be done to stop prejudice against those who are different.

- For too long have alternative lifestyles been deemed unfit for work environments. After a year of working at my job, and sweating through summer, I have FINALLY been able to procure a short sleeved shirt. I was origionally told that I would not be able to wear one because I had tattoo that was big enough to make people feel uncomfortable (it was not hurtful, rude, or discriminating of anyone). I should not have been discriminated against, and not allowed a uniform shirt when asked for one, because I had a tattoo, especially because the guidebook stated that I was allowed. It was the managers choice to find fault in ME because I have chosen to live an alternative lifestyle than his chosen one. Please, give us our freedom, we are Americans too, and should be given the same rights to live our lives as our choosing WITHOUT the worry of job discrimination.

- If I'm a qualified employee, I don't look too "circus freak" and my interview goes well, why should the fact that my hair is purple get in the way?

- I am a white collared worker with blue hair and think the notion that we are any more unprofessional than people with "natural colors" is absurd.

- The real bad people in these cases are the prejudice, not the ones who embrace who they are. The people in the workforce represent 40\% of society. They tend to have more secrets to hide and are more morally declined then we are, atleast from personal experience. The others embrace who they are, are strong, and actually have a personallity. Do not rob us of our esscence.

- I think everything you have said is compleatly right. Im not American Im English but i have changed my hair colour so many times i have forgottan what i look like with natural colour. Reds, purples, orange, green. I have always worked when ive had these colours and there has never been a problem. Im a cook in a nursing home the only time i speak to people when they come in to the kitchen and when im serving meals. I was hiered with bright red hair and there is nothing in the policy about unnatural colours so when the main bosses lady came in and made a comment about my hair i got a little pissed off. So all im doing is buying a hair cover for my hair because out of the work place i dont see why i have to be like everyone else the thought of it depresses me why should give up my identity? When will people stop been so narrowminded. I work really hard i love the residents and i like to get them involved in the next colour i dye it, it lets us have a joke around. Just dont know how havibg a strange hair colour effects your working practice. Keep up the pertition. Good luck :-)
