Dear: Petitioner
The movie District 9 is an attack against Africans and African culture. Heres why?
The movie depicts Nigerians as lawless cannibalistic savages, engaged in organized crime. These portrayals affect hardworking Nigerians, and others of African ancestry, creating feelings of mistrust and suspicion, within our society and globally, having a very detrimental affect on the minds of our children and all viewers.
Further injury is implied by the usage of the name Obassanjo, spelled Obesandjo in print form publications, such as in the wikipedia article on District 9. This is a clever and subtle attempt by the producer, director, and the writer to conceal the foul usage of the name Obassanjo, and avoid any legal actions or liability.
You may say, come on its just a name? But observe how its used and what it implies.
It is the name of the former Nigerian President, and by its usage reinforces stereotypes of not only Africans, but nations of Black majority rule, and other so called, developing nations, reinforcing media stereotypes, and suggesting their headed by criminals, because it is the name for the crime boss in the movie.
We believe an already existing powder keg has been lit. Heres why.
The film is set in South Africa. During apartheid, migrant workers from other African nations were allowed to work there, for cheaper wages without benefits. This practice was used to weaken the unions, and their demands for better wages, benefits, and work conditions by native South Africans.
The South African economy was disenfranchised through divestment, before the handing over to native Black majority rule. The hopes of every Black South African of living in a utopia much like the white minority has been shattered, and conditions have changed very little for the majority. Unemployment and the global economic crisis has fueled mistrust, ignorance, and violence, targeting African migrant communities, and each other.
This violence negates the fact, that these are citizens of the same African states, that supported the Native Black majority's anti-apartheid resistance movement.
The film's clever usage of Aliens from another world, and how it diverts the viewer from the subtle attack on African culture. Let us remember, immigrants are called Aliens, and they are the target of blame in any country when things go wrong. Dont point the finger at us, point it at them. Well the depiction of Aliens in the film can not blind the conscious rational minds of people of African ancestry. We require the Producer, Director, et al, to take responsibility for their actions, which includes a public apology and direct compensation, which will be used to build infrastructure and stimulate the economy to the benefit of the disenfranchised in South Africa and diffuse any further unrest.
Keep in mind that Hollywood continues to strengthen stereotypes by the negative portrayal of Africans, and their descendants, which has an adverse affect globally. Our world requires images that unite us, not divide us, if we are to evolve into a true Global Community. If you are interested in seeing this happen, please add your name to the bottom of this petition. Let people know about this! The more names the better!

- It is really an unconsciounable attack on an entire people. It goes beyond mere maligning to a deliberate attempt to incite hatred and terrible violence against Nigerians. Nigerians have already been victims of the most heinous attacks in South Africa. This film will only fuel more of such. How can one be so pea-brained? I am so disappointed in the so called 'artist', director, Peter Jackson.

- It is a shame, we have no leaders at the helm of affairs in Nigeria; we have rulers who are messing up all the time in the country. Nigeria have intellectuals and people of integrity who have been compelled to stay away from politics and public service as a result of the conduct and characters of the self centered few who have continued to stay in power causing a great and incalculable harm to the great nation of Nigeria and its dynamic people. This is why the good people of Nigeria have become the chewing stick of Europe and many dafts and illiterates in the western media who originally are racists and have refused to see the good in other human beings in Africa and the Black man specifically. If Hollywood actors have had a human culture, they would have known to respect the cultures of Africa and Africans. One is not surprised that it is South Africa they went to make this movie in question, it is their little europe in Africa. Is it not possible for Africns to take Hollywood to court?
