Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi
Dear Postal / Elected Officials:
I am writing regarding my concerns about the postal facility located at 101 Hyde Street in San Francisco, CA.
This postal facility location has become a hazard to my communitys safety due to its minimal staffing and lack of security. Some measures have been taken to increase the safety of this location, such as Hastings College of the Law and the U.S. Postal Service installing security cameras on the exterior of the buildings. The SFPD Tenderloin Station has heightened their law enforcement activity at this location. However, these safety efforts are not sufficient and the location is still, to name a few, plagued with:
Drug Dealing and other illegal activities (i.e., sexual behaviors) taking place in and outside of the building;
Loitering and encampments- The front of the building has turned into an active campsite for people to lay their heads and dispose of their human waste, used needles, and trash.
Building maintenance- Neighborhood organizations, such as the Community Benefit District can help with the maintenance of the sidewalks outside of the building. However, the interior and exterior of the building need to be fully maintained.
Money solicitation
The problem is the building is wide open and not secure. This results in illegal activities occurring in and around this location. As a resident/frequenter of the neighborhood, I understand the neighborhood itself is challenging. However, if this building continues to provide an open forum for drug dealing, loitering, sexual deviancies, then the U.S. Postal Service is providing a disservice to our community.
As a concerned community member, I would like to see this postal facility location become fully staffed and/or a full service location and provide onsite security. The provision of staffing would help deter the illegal and unsafe activities that persist in and outside this facility.
I ask you expand postal services and an ongoing security presence at the 101 Hyde Street location.

- The Tenderloin needs a full service Post Office. Staffing this unstaffed facility by adding full postal services will help make this site safer and provide needed postal services. Thank you.

- The October, 1989 earthquake badly damaged the Main Post Office / US Court of appeals building at 7th & Mission Sts. The Citys only main and after hours post office. Since then the SF postmaster has offered substantial decrease in service and allowed its facilities to decline.

- Yes. We need to generate foot traffic from legitimate users to scatter the loiterers.

- This area continues to become more and more dangerous on a daily basis, both AM and PM times. I am not at all afraid of the homeless campers, but of the young gang-type drug dealers who have started frequenting that corner since the PO closure. Thanks for this petition.

- This request is particularly timely as the unsupervised space is open for a lot of illegal and dangerous activity and the residents of the tenderloin deserve a full service post office.
