The University of Connecticut is the sole doctoral degree granting public institution in Connecticut and the states flagship, Land-Grant university. Regrettably, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Connecticut has recently publicized its recommendation to dissolve its Department of Geology and Geophysics. This extremely shortsighted decision not only represents a contemptuous affront to the future of geology as a profession, but this uninspiring decision also betrays the very future of the Connecticut publics well being. Indeed, the deterioration of this fundamental curriculum, which represents the cornerstone of liberal arts education at UConn and colleges everywhere is not only in complete contradiction to contemporary trends in both education and business, but also to the very mission statement of the University of Connecticut itself and to the goals outlined in its own academic plan.

Perhaps it is the literal translation of this field of study, the study of earth, that belies the publics awareness of the fact that it is geologic processes that constrain human endeavor. This fact, coupled with the uncommon breadth of training required by those who choose to study such processes is why geology is considered the most interdisciplinary field of study offered. This cornerstone of a liberal arts education prepares students for a wide range of careers.

As such, please lend your support in this petition with your signature of opposition to the aforementioned recommendation.

With hopes for a more optimistic and encouraging result, the undersigned respectfully insist that an adequate alternative be presented before the Board of Trustees prior to its approval of such a drastic recommendation.
