The purpose of this petition is to pursuade the State of Washington to change the policies regarding racially motivated violence, words, and epithets to a harsher punishment. Currently, this is a gray area that sometimes falls under anti-bullying policies, sometimes these types of attacks fall under inappropriate behavior. The punishment is usually a talking to for the first offense, punishment for reoccuring offenses vary. This gives each student an opportunity to use racial attacks on minority children (racial minority, sexual orientation, and religious affiliation fall under the category of "minority"). This causes anguish to the minority child when they are subjected to this treatment and the insuing punishment only leads to more of a feeling of "unimportance" by the offender and furthers the feelings of "not mattering" of the person attacked. The prayer of this petition is that we can show the State Of Washington Superintendent of Public Instruction that this is a serious problem in Washington State and to have a more concisely structured and executed punishment that will lead to a decrease in racially motivated attacks on the children in Washington Schools.
