We, the undersigned of this petition, request that the administration of LaVergne High School in LaVergne, TN, create a class for students to learn about the various religions of the world. Countless schools statewide offer such classes, so LaVergne High School should be added to that list. No one student would be forced to take the class. This could be offered as either a short one semester class or a full, in depth full year course. Subjects to be covered could include, but are not limited to, Christianity and its branches, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Taoism, Shamanism, Shinto, Scientology and various pagan-based area-specific sects. Classical religions, such as that of the Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, and the early pagans. The teaching of each religion would consist of its main beliefs, important gods or goddesses, common worship rituals and/or practices, and light analyses of its so-called 'sacred text' (Bible, Upanishads, Qur'an, Torah, Daozang).
The offerring of this course could lead to greater religious tolerance throughout LaVergne High School. Due to the prevalance of certain religions in some racial groups, racial tolerance could also be increased. Overall, a world religions course at La Vergne High School could help increase unity throughout the community, creating a positive place for people to grow and prosper without fear of prejudice.

    • As a senior, I am signing not for my own benefit, but for the benefit for future students of LaVergne High School. A World Religions class can be a very useful tool in helping a student decide their career and provide them with an outlet to find unbiased information about different religions without being "forced" to believe one.

    • Religious tolerance eh? Not a bad idea, yet this would be better if all schools would study a bit on the diference between religions and none religious folks. And In addition to also make it plain that no religious folks shold interefere with the course as in taking it offensively.

    • I love the idea of World Religion class at LHS, but I'm afraid it will be greatly misunderstood what exactly the goal of such a class is. There should be more information on what kind of class you're trying to create or you might be getting support for the wrong reasons.

    • The many oppritunities of the world are based in religions and how else can we learn those religions if not to be taught

    • The curriculum/teaching plan content MUST simply lay out the facts and not endorse any one religion before I would completely support the class. I believe it would have to in order to be funded by any state programming.

    • I attended LHS and have to say that i wouldve liked to have had this class. There's too much that people dont know about religions and so they are quick to judge people on it without understanding. This would be a way to help prevent such disasters
