Dear Ontario Attorney General Michael Bryant,
We the undersigned are submitting to you this petition to keep the "pit-bull" breeds within our communities.
We the people believe that this breed should NOT be banned however we do believe that something definitely needs to be done. The statistics for the last ten years have included breeds of Great Danes, Rottweilers, German shepherds, huskies, malamutes, Dobermans, chow chows, St. Bernards, Akitas and pit bulls.
We the people believe that all "pit-bull" breeds including the American Staffordshire Terrier, The Staffordshire Terrier, the American Pit Bull Terrier and those dogs who have been mixed with the above, should have owner regulation laws. With the owner regulation laws the breed is not banned, however it would make it that much more difficult to actually own the breed itself.
We the people also believe that with these owner regulation laws the owners of such breeds will have to contribute to the following: mandatory spay/neuter by 10 months of age, liability insurance, mandatory licensing within the city and/or with the province of Ontario and/or the country of Canada at a higher fixed rate then others, muzzling in public areas, yearly temperament testing of such dog, age limitation laws to place limitations on the age of the owners who own such breeds, mandatory training with reputable trainers in the area, and so forth.
We the people believe that should these breeds become banned that people will put forth more effort to own these illegal breeds which will cause more issues then having breed specific regulation laws.
When there is set legislature that is strictly governed, we believe this will decrease the risk of attacks and decrease the risks of those irresponsible people of the public who will try to own the breed whether it is illegal or not.
We the people believe that no breed of dog is naturally aggressive, we fully understand what the breed's original purpose (this including bull baiting, ratting and "pit" fighting) is, and we believe that something should definitely be done to try and correct this. Owners or potential owners should be fully educated about said breeds and the onus should be on the breeders of said dog to ensure he/she is selling to a responsible person.
In closing, we the people believe that it isnt the breed of dog that needs to be banned, but more so specific owners of said dogs.
Murder is not the answer Mr. Bryant
Please also keep this quote in mind. Taken from Tony Harman of the Northern Districts Bull Terrier Club of NSW Inc. "Unfortunately, a large part of the general public is still prejudiced against the breed because of its heritage. It is worth reminding people that dogs of the past fought and killed because MAN wanted them to be fighters and killers."
Sincerely,
The People of Ontario

- it's not the dogs, something has to be done with the owners, it is their fault

- I believe that any owner of these breeds of dogs should agree to regulated dog training classes. I believe that educating the owners and training these dogs at an early age is key to correcting the problem.

- Although there is much more to say on this subject, some of the main points are there and I agree with them. No particular breed should be banned but there should be some dog-specific bylaws to protect the public from aggressive and irresponsible owners.

- I believe banning the breed is not the solution but proper education and handling of the breed is required. I have heard in the past certain cities had bylaws containing the breed and owning them and muzzling required, as well as the dog going through obidience training and such. Perhaps look into the areas of the owners and their responsibilities in owning the breed. I say save the breed

- i also believe that banning them is not the answer, its not the breeds fault, its how they are raised,if this breed was banned then what about rottweilers, mastiffs, and other aggressive breeds? it doesnt matter what type of dog it is they are many cases where other breeds have attacked.

- The breed isn't the problem- moronic owners are. If Pitbulls are banned, these halfwits will simply move on to another breed...

- I feel that you should not be able to "ban" an animal, although, i feel that if someone wants to buy a pit bull that they must pay for a special license, and if the dog is a violent one, the owner must pay a fine.

- I do not believe they should be banned. They are a very loving and loyal pet and should be treated with respect just like any other animal. Be trained and taught properly they are an awesome pet.

- It's the wrong type of people owning the dogs, who give this breed the bad publicity.

- I feel that the Pitbulls should be allowed to stay.. I don't think that they should suffer for the way that their "masters" teach them to be a violent animal. Pitbulls are like any other kind of dog, they are what you make them out to be...

- Banning breeds is not going to reduce attacks. People who want aggressive dogs will find another breed to take the place of Pit Bulls.

- No Canadian Citizen should have to walk the streets in fear of this breed, and no Canadian citizen should be denied the right to legally own an animal from these bloodlines. As a Canine Behaviorist and dog trainer the majority of my clients who own pit bulls are white-collar executives who acknowledge the characteristic traits of this breed. These individuals have learned the importance of how to raise and work these dogs and what their responsibilities as pet owners are. Education is the route towards resolving this issue. In reality it is the uneducated canine owners who are causing the death of their own pets and others. Education is not only at the level of the owner. Education also is a responsibility of the general public, municipalities along with pet and related business. Installing laws that simply reprimand the dog is not the solution but a Band-Aid to this issue.

- I was bitten by a Dobermin and an eskimo spits as a child along with a german sheppard resently, should we ban those dogs too? All I did was walk in those peoples houses when I was bitten and I knew those dogs for a while. I know at least 20 pits personaly and never had a problem. Dog or owner.......what do you think? Blanket laws are easy. Enforcement laws are fair to the good pet owners.
