Petition to Save the 172 Bus

We the undersigned commuters call on Dublin Bus to reverse its decision to abolish the 172 Bus Route from Dunard to Kildare Street via Oxmantown Road and Stoneybatter.

The bus runs down through Stoneybatter and is a valuable lifeline for many elderly people in the area who use the service to do all the day-to-day activities, like shopping, going to the bank and collecting their pension.

It is also an important link between the National Museum in Kildare Street and the Museum at Collins Barracks, Benburb Street. The bus operates a limited service and the savings that may be made through its abolition cannot justify the hardship the loss of this route will cause.

    • This is a very important route that should be kept in order to persuade people to leave the car at home when commuting to work.

    • This is a very useful bus service. It serves streets whose residents would otherwise have to walk quite some distance for an alternative bus. I think it would be a shame to cut it when the government is supposed to be encouraging people to use public transport.

    • This service is essential for the elderly in the area. Why not save money by running smaller buses such as the "City Imps" on the route? The double deckers are never near half full.

    • My husband uses the 172 to transport our son to childcare each morning. The loss of the 172 will negatively impact our family. Also, it will cause hardship to the elderly people on Oxmanstown Road who regularly use the service.

    • This bus is essential for our elderly neighbours. Why not replace the double-deckers on this route with smaller buses to save on fuel costs? That way everyone would be happy.

    • Use the 172 on occasion; have noticed increased usage during the 4 years I've lived in the area. It exemplifies the best side of the notion of public transport. Also, due to ongoing failure to provide any kind of 'real time' timetable information by Dublin Bus, this is one of the few buses going across the river for which you could attempt to guess the time of its arrival in Stoneybatter. I would think the 172 is absolutely vital in the area for the elderly or infirm and it is certainly an important commuter service for those in the Dunard and Oxmantown areas.
