As a patron of the York Region Transit system for the last six years, I have been subject to numerous price increases, missing buses, and hours waiting in cold weather. Nevertheless, I continued to appreciate the services that the YRT provided for me, and aside from the occasional rant or two, I did not have a problem with the way that they conducted business. That is, until they announced another price increase of 25 cents per fare on their website, the day before it happened. Now, I understood the past three increases, considering that gas prices were soaring to $1.20 a litre, but now that gas prices have decreased quite noticeably, I cant help but feel that this increase makes no sense.
The YRT website claims that the price increase is necessary, as they are being faced with raising maintenance and insurance costs, but with lower gas prices, why cant they keep the fare the same, and accommodate the extra money that would have otherwise been spent on gas, to their maintenance and insurance costs? The TTC is not only keeping their prices the same, which were already cheaper than York Regions, but they are also expanding their services with their new light-rail transit system.
York Region Transit is not offering anything more to its patrons. We are not getting more frequent buses, more comfortable buses, or even more bus routes. There is no reason for a fare increase.
I strongly encourage any willing patrons to immediately take action against the YRT, until a fair compromise is made.

- it is already too expensive, an increase is absolutely ridiculous. plus with the economy as it is yhou might as well be asking for people to stop using public transportation. yrt lost their minds.

- Busses are never on time. There have been several occasions where the bus didn't come for hours and i winded up walking to my destination or taking a taxi. If they had improved the services and busses I could see why the price increase but no. Nothing has changed. I remember when bus fares were 1.60 but 3.25? I'm in highschool and it ain't easy to get money. This new yrt fare increase is disgusting.

- I had no idea it was going up again. If I want to visit my parents it now costs me 13 dollars to get there and back. If public transit is to be taken as a legitimate alternative to driving, it must be comparably reliable, reasonably fast, or at least cheaper.

- I think that the prices for bus tickets, especially bus passes are ridiculously high. I 'm a college student and I have been using the pulic transist system for two years. Within those two years I went from paying $85.00 for a bus pass to $105.00. That's not fair!. After all I spend money for text books too.

- Overpriced for no improvements, cost of fuel is way down why the increase? It is less expensive to drive my own car now. What a way to lose ridership-way to go!

- Increases are warranted when the YRT demonstrates commitment to its riders. When a bus is late, when bus drivers are rude and possess poor driving skills, when buses fail to show up to a stop at all, the YRT is failing to provide the public with a reliable mode of transportation. This hike is unjustified.

- Frankly, I'm angry that the YRT does not even seem to have any strategy towards lowering costs for riders. Is there anyone thinking about how to make the system more efficient and cheaper rather than taking it for granted that riders will ALWAYS pay for the price increase? Ridiculous.

- There is no reason or legislation for another price increase. Buses do not come frequently in the winter and VIVA is a pethatic joke with missed buses
