Sub: Protest against privatization of education agenda.
Dear Prof. Harshe,
Your decision to launch a self-financed B.A. in Media Studies programme through the in-house Instiute for Profession Studies (IPS) inspite of the presence of an independent Department of Journalism and Mass Communication in your Univeristy has invoked strong protest from the students, faculty and intellectuals outside. The objective of IPS was to generate resources for your Univeristy. But since Allahabad Univeristy (AU) has become a central univeristy you're not even able to utilize your full grant for the year.
We believe education is not a market commodity and your abovmentioned initiative is privatization of education at the cost of diluting quality and demoralizing an already existing Department by floating a parallel programme.
We urge you to resist the temptation of privatization and strengthen the mainstream programmes with central funding available to you.
We support the ongoing struggle on and outisde the campus of AU against privatization of education and express solidarity with the struggling students and faculty members on campus.
Sincerely,
Dr Sandeep Pandey

- Solidarity with the struggling students of AU. The HRD Ministry is hoping to harness the recession to push through privatisation measures in the name of 'austerity' - recently they have ordered univs to adopt fee hikes, levy user charges etc in order to fund even purchase of essentials leke chemicals for labs and books for libraries. Yet the same govt has money to shower on corporates. Witness their Rs 20 crore gift to a single businessman - Mukesh Ambani in the last Budget (http://thestatesman.net/page.arcview.php?clid=1&id=301512&usrsess=1). Gifts, goveaways and exemptions to corporates in the last year totalled more than the fiscal deficit of the govt! Proves that talk of 'fund crunch' is bogus!

- Kapil Sibal's agenda and even Prof. Yashpal's report all boil down to a privatisation package... We must resist it in the days to come in all Univ campuses. Keep the struggle going, Allahabad Univ students!

- It is unfortunate that educationists would want to indulge in acts to promote privatization of education. Before they put all the think tanks in this direction I feel that the effort should rather be directed towards ensuring that education should be made avialable to all those children who have a right to it but are still being deprived.

- In India, privatisation (including self-financiang courses and all other forms of PPP) is a direct result of withdrawal of the State from its Constitutional obligations to provide adequate funding for education. It also implies that the character of knowledge would be allowed to be determined by the needs of the global market, rather than by social needs or the knowledge-related requirements of the subject itself. Finally, it is an agenda that promotes inequality and social exclusion. Do we want to build an India for the benefit of the global capital or for the welfare of the people?

- Educational institutions must give a sustainable maximum output for minimum return on investment, which is opposite of business's natural goal to maximise return (profit) on investment.
