We, the People of the United States of America are petitioning President, Barack Obama to remove U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. Instead fill the position of U.S. Secretary of Education with a highly qualified educator as the federal government through its Race To The Top grants expects a highly qualified public school teacher and administrator in the nation's schools. It is incumbent on you the President to lead through example to recruit, select and appoint an individual more prepared through education, credentials and experience to occupy one of the most important cabinet positions in your administration. Secondly, the vision and mission Mr. Duncan purports through the Race To The Top funding of public education have caused havoc throughout the educational system in the nation as it seems to exacerbate the tensions that exist in competing models of educational reforms. We the people deserve the most highly qualified educational leader to occupy the position of Secretary of Education for which Mr. Arne Duncan himself has called for as one of the criteria for the Race To The Top Funds. Mr. Duncan set the bar high for the nation, a highly qualified teacher and administrator in the public schools, we the people deserve to have a highly qualified U.S. Secretary of Education. His B.A. Degree in Sociology does not qualify Mr. Duncan to be the U.S. Secretary of Education.

    • The Race to the Top model seems to reinforce the flawed mandates outlined in No Child Left Behind. This does not feel like Hope or Change, but rather more of the same. Our education system should be defined by a constructivist, authentic, and exploratory curriculum that rewards teachers for creativity and challenges students to think critically. Education matters. You cannot measure teaching and learning within the current assessment system because it fails to account for the magic that occurs in so many of our classrooms across the country. We must listen to and learn from the voices of progressive educators such as Alfie Kohn, Jonathan Kozol, Linda Darling-Hammond, and Deborah Meier. We are in desperate need of a Secretary of Education with a Degree in Education, known for progressive research and practical experience -- not one with a Sociology Degree along with an agenda that results in competition and extrinsic rewards tied to norm referenced, culturally biased, multiple choice tests.
