Whereas:

Citizens with disability are outliving their parents for the first time in history;
Families demonstrate resourcefulness and resilience in caring for their relatives with disability;
Families demonstrate their willingness to contribute financially to their relatives with disability;
Families seek greater recognition for their contributions within the Canadian tax system; and
Families seek a range of tools and mechanisms to assist them in securing a good life now and in the future for their relatives with disability.

Therefore your petitioners respectfully request that your Government create a Disability Savings Plan that:

Provides a flexible savings vehicle that allows family members to make financial contributions during their lifetimes and upon their death, without penalization under provincial programs.
Recognizes families financial contributions with a tax incentive.
Advances a good life and full citizenship for Canadians with disability by promoting shared responsibility between families and government.
Promotes stronger, more self sufficient and more resilient Canadian Families.
Encourages future planning and self-reliance for citizens with disability.

    • Caring for a family member with a disability is both a responsiblity and a priviledge. A Disability Savings Plan is an important way of ensuring our loved ones have a good life, a life of choice, of contribution, of friends, and of security.

    • As Director of a large non-profit organization that supports individuals with disabilities and their families, I see daily examples of the pressures brought to bear on families, including expectations for long-term financial support. A tax break for these families would help to ease this pressure.

    • As a parent of two learning disabled children, I have supported one of my sons long into adulthood, due to his employment issues, but have never received any support or taxation recognition for taking on that responsibility.
