Recently (Today to be excact), Disney released some information that shocked the nation about Hayao Miyazaki! However it wasn't GOOD nes at all! In fact it was quite bad. They stated that they had no plans to release any more of his films in the near future. Here's a small article about it:

According to an article published by Inside.com, the Disney company has no plans to release any further Hayao Miyazaki or Studio Ghibli films in America, although they have the domestic distribution rights to 11 films including Kiki's Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, and the current Japanese blockbuster Spirited Away (Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi).

"Hayao Miyazaki's animated feature Spirited Away, is already on track to unseat Titanic as Japan's highest-grossing film ever. And Disney, which has a lucrative worldwide distribution deal with the director, is uniquely positioned to jump in. Yet the best explanation for Disney's caution can be summed up with two words: Princess Mononoke. Mononoke, Miyazaki's last film, also was a smash hit in Japan -- taking in a second-best-ever $150 million at the Japanese box office in 1997 -- but was a mammoth dud in the States. (Spirited Away has taken in $106 million worldwide at the box office in its first five weeks, the only non-American movie to pass $100 million mark this year.)

According to the article, the dark nature of Princess Mononoke surprised Disney and "the disastrous results of Mononoke's 1998 U.S. release... changed everything... the film grossed just over $2 million" at the American box office. "That's kind of embarrassing, to have the most successful film in the history of Japan come to the U.S. and not do that well," said Steve Alpert, executive representative for Tokuma Publishing, the company that owns Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli.

According to Alpert, "Disney currently has no official plans to release any more of Miyazaki's films in America."

I fell that this is totaly unfair for a number of reasons. For one thing Mononoke was a LIMITED release! What kind of company releases a limited release movie, without advertising, or much warning and expect it to sell well? I didn't even GET the movie in my area untill the run for the film was almost over! And then the movie had only stayed in my town for about a week.

In fact this movie got so little attaintion, I asked a friend of mine (Who is a big fan of anime, Miyazaki, and animation in general) if had seen Princess Mononoke in the theaters. His response: "Princess Mononoke? It's Mononoke Hime! And it's only available in Janan." Well of course I told him about the so-called theater release for america, and he went wild and said: "Why didn't anybody advertise this!?! I had no idea about any of this!" Sad huh?

I also feel like Disney isn't even giving this alot of thought, and now it's time to tell them that WE WILL go see (And buy) Miyazaki films if giving the chance!!! Please sign this petition and send letters to Disney at this address (Please be firm, but polite):

But please sign! We need to get the message across to Disney NOW!!! Otherwise we might not get anouther chance! Please sign! At the least Disney should give us a chance to buy the movies on VHS and DVD!

    • It is such an aweful shame than Princess Mononoke had a limited release. That is the only reason it didn't soar in box offices. I am 100% positive that it would have done excellently if it was advertised as well as Disneys other, high grossing films. Princess Mononoke is my all time favourite movie. It is wonderfully illustrated, written and directed to the highest extent. The only way for everyone else to appreciate Miyazaki's films is to get to SEE them. After being suggested to buy Princess Mononoke, I LOVED it, and so do all my friends, i haven't heard a single negative comment about it, honestly. I went on a serious search for Miyazaki's other films, but very few were ever released in America. With far better advertising, and UN-limited releasing Miyazaki's films are guaranteed to capture the rest of America's hearts and imaginations

    • Seriously, why are Disney so averse to releasing some more adult animation? are they afraid of protests or something? Come on, you guys have so much money...we need these videos. They are artistically crucial and we can't get em any other way.

    • Disney Marketing mistakes should not stop you from releasing these films. The market is there you just have to have a marketing department that actually will do their job and advertise the film!

    • When Mononoke came to theatres, I wasn't living in Toronto, and though I knew about it I also had no way to come up to Toronto and see it. At least if you aren't planning on releasing any more Ghibli films you could sell the rights to someone who WILL release the films, and someone who will advertise and release them properly so that Ghibli fans can see the films instead of just hope you'll change your mind. It's unfair to tie them up if Disney isn't planning on letting us see them. You can at least make SOME money off of that, if not the millions that were hoped for. Also, as far as the releasing and popularity is concerned regarding, say, Mononoke and Kiki, the climate in North America for anime is a much less..adapted one than Japan is. Disney has done a lot to try to change that view, but it also continues to specifically cater to children through its features. If Disney wants to reach for all ages in its marketing and releases, it should experiment more with advertising and releases like Mononoke.

    • Who's going to watch a movie in North America steeped in Japanese myth? No body gives a shit. I saw and loved 千と千尋の神隠し but I can't see it appealing to a non-Japanese/Asian audience unless you have specific interest in that field or related areas. To put it simply we are too exclusive in wanting to watch mainly things produced in our own domestic market. As soon as you put in something like made in Japan on a movie, people automatically assume low grade, unless of course it's electronics or some such. Maybe I'm just bitter after living in Japan and having to comming back to all of you ridiculous gaijin.

    • I guess its all for the better though Disney has always been about the money never the content, never the art! Here they have a director who could win them Oscars upon Oscars of awards, but no its better to satisfy that refined American taste (viva moola)! If American film is to ever grow it first has to mix with positive influences. No greater force in film exists today; or ever for that matter. Its ironic though, because its probably the only force capable of refining that stubborn American taste for clichй dripping action & comedy flicks. When will you learn that its all about the message! No I guess its is for the better, I wouldnt want Disney to be credited for bringing Miyazaki to the English speaking world with hick (Billy Bob) accents. If your not going to release his films at least give the rights up for distributors capable of doing his films justice. Miyazaki films will probably be the only Disney videos or products Ill ever buyIf only!.. But no harm we know Japanese already!
