Recently (Today to be excact), Disney released some information that shocked the nation about Hayao Miyazaki! However it wasn't GOOD nes at all! In fact it was quite bad. They stated that they had no plans to release any more of his films in the near future. Here's a small article about it:
According to an article published by Inside.com, the Disney company has no plans to release any further Hayao Miyazaki or Studio Ghibli films in America, although they have the domestic distribution rights to 11 films including Kiki's Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, and the current Japanese blockbuster Spirited Away (Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi).
"Hayao Miyazaki's animated feature Spirited Away, is already on track to unseat Titanic as Japan's highest-grossing film ever. And Disney, which has a lucrative worldwide distribution deal with the director, is uniquely positioned to jump in. Yet the best explanation for Disney's caution can be summed up with two words: Princess Mononoke. Mononoke, Miyazaki's last film, also was a smash hit in Japan -- taking in a second-best-ever $150 million at the Japanese box office in 1997 -- but was a mammoth dud in the States. (Spirited Away has taken in $106 million worldwide at the box office in its first five weeks, the only non-American movie to pass $100 million mark this year.)
According to the article, the dark nature of Princess Mononoke surprised Disney and "the disastrous results of Mononoke's 1998 U.S. release... changed everything... the film grossed just over $2 million" at the American box office. "That's kind of embarrassing, to have the most successful film in the history of Japan come to the U.S. and not do that well," said Steve Alpert, executive representative for Tokuma Publishing, the company that owns Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli.
According to Alpert, "Disney currently has no official plans to release any more of Miyazaki's films in America."
I fell that this is totaly unfair for a number of reasons. For one thing Mononoke was a LIMITED release! What kind of company releases a limited release movie, without advertising, or much warning and expect it to sell well? I didn't even GET the movie in my area untill the run for the film was almost over! And then the movie had only stayed in my town for about a week.
In fact this movie got so little attaintion, I asked a friend of mine (Who is a big fan of anime, Miyazaki, and animation in general) if had seen Princess Mononoke in the theaters. His response: "Princess Mononoke? It's Mononoke Hime! And it's only available in Janan." Well of course I told him about the so-called theater release for america, and he went wild and said: "Why didn't anybody advertise this!?! I had no idea about any of this!" Sad huh?
I also feel like Disney isn't even giving this alot of thought, and now it's time to tell them that WE WILL go see (And buy) Miyazaki films if giving the chance!!! Please sign this petition and send letters to Disney at this address (Please be firm, but polite):

- Of course a limited released, unadvertised movie is going to flop! Noone knew it was out! I did'nt know until it was almost gone from the theatres, and then I went and saw it in the last couple days of its release. . . please release more of Miyazaki's stuff and ADVERTISE IT this time!

- Miyazaki is great and I'd love to see more of his films in American theaters. Please keep dubbing them and if you advertise them more and release them everywhere, I'm sure you'll get a better turnout.

- It's completely unfair that Disney would go about and suddenly stop releasing Miyazaki films... is this based on the fact that Princess Mononoke/Mononoke Hime didn't do well in the states? I found it ludicrous how there was barely any promotion for Mononoke in the first place! How does Disney expect any results without even advertising? Were they afraid that Mononoke would actually OUTSELL Disney-made films? Perhaps. I don't know , but I still find it stupid overall.

- princess mononoke is quite possibly the single best written animation film ever. i was only able to watch it in theaters due to it being shown at a local college when i happened to read the paper on the right day. an extremely limited and non publicized movie making very little money is a given. there was more press for "the emperor's new groove" than there was for this. i work in a video store, and when "emperor's" came out, nine tenths of my customers had no idea what it was. that shows what should have been expected with princess mononoke, a movie that recieved no television or radio press, and was only shown in at most one tenth of the theatres in the country.

- Hayao Miyazaki is my favorite animator. His work far transcends the language barrier. With a good advertising push and the right type of release, his films could be massively sucessful. I own Princess Mononoke on DVD and have shown it to all my friends, and they unanimously praise it. Why did we not see the film in Theatres? Because it never came to our town! Remember, movies like 'Castle in the Sky' can appeal to a much wider audience than Princess Mononoke. If it were in wide release, with proper marketing, it would bring entire families into the theatre. Take it from me, as I am 15 years old- if I'm not mistaken, a part of the demographic that Disney doesn't usually get.

- I understand if you don't want to try out more Miyazaki films in the theaters, but please release them on DVD so that the fans can still get them. Also, please include the Japanese language tracks with any of them, as the fans will, of course, want that too.

- I have loved anime for five years and most of all despeartely wanted to see Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, I was so happy when I heard Disney was going to release it and finally the monstrosity that is "Warriors of the Wind" would die forever. I pray Disney would change their mind. I have waited so long, why must you do this? All I want is to see some of the greatest films of all time, are you afraid these films will destroy you? Than why did you buy the rights? Was this planned from the start? To monopolize the greates animated films of all times so that you can remain on top? I hope my suspicions are false. All I want is to see films that inspire me and find purely incredible. This is not fair. Please, do not do this.

- Perhaps Mononoke would have made some money if it had actually been released in a decent number of theaters. My friends and I would have gladly paid to see it at least twice in theaters if not for the fact that it was playing nearly 2-3 hours away. I don't recall seeing any trailers for the movie on television, either, so I can't say I'm surprised it failed financially when it wasn't available to a large portion of the nation in the first place. Anime titles on DVD are hot sellers right now, and Miyazaki's films are without a doubt among the best Japanese animation one could ever hope to see. Depriving the anime-watching community of these films is akin to depriving a film historian of Citizen Kane or a science-fiction junkie of Star Wars. I beg Disney to release these titles, and if not, at least let someone else (who knows what the fans want and has the means to deliver) have the license.
