Our Health and Safety Dictate a Four-Way Stop at the Centre/Hollow/Clinton Hollow Intersection Now!
Nearby resident Betty Skidmore of Centre Road:
"My 19 year old daughter was involved in an auto accident on February 8, 2004. She was traveling south on Centre Road and a car failed to stop at the intersection of Hollow and Centre. The intersection is extremely dangerous and there has been countless accidents there in the past. Something has to be done at that intersection, and that something is a four-way stop. I do not want to see my child or anyone else's child, for that matter anyone else, hurt at that intersection again. Thank you for your help in this matter, it may just save a life."
Nearby residents Mike & Linda Terpening of Clinton Hollow Road:
"Frequent nights while walking our dogs, vehicles have been observed traveling east and west on Hollow Road passing through the stop signs at 30 to 40 mph. There is also a second problem with speeders travelers south on Centre Rd leaving little to no time for vehicles turning south from Hollow Rd. A 4 way would reduce accidents, injuries, and surely keep death away from this intersection. My wife and I have on numerous occasions been in our yard and heard screeching brakes and crunching fenders. Thankfully there have been no deaths or seriously injuries, but to allow a condition like this to continue to exist is only inviting trouble."
Glenn Carlberg, who actually lives at that corner:
"I find pieces of cars all the time in the yard. There used to be a huge maple tree on that corner of my property-- it was long ago destroyed by car accident. I had to move my mailbox. It's just not a safe corner."
Les Ogles of Hollow Road:
"I've seen and heard so many accidents at that intersection-- just about one every other month it seems. I drive a dumptruck, too, and have to nose out into the road from Hollow because of the limited sight distance. It's dangerous; a four-way stop should have been put there long ago."
Nearby resident Jeanette Pulsifer wrote this letter to the Town Supervisor literally five years ago:
"Simple stop signs erected at the County Rt. 18 intersection going north and south would prevent any more injuries or death, and I could be at peace, knowing I would not have to hear that familiar crash sound and keep responding to the scene."
Nearby resident William Curtis of Hollow Road:
"A four-way stop would be wonderful at that intersection."
Nearby residents Walter and Gertrude Whalen of Clinton Hollow Road:
"I've witnessed quite a few accidents there myself-- a four-way stop is needed."
Note-- former Town Supervisor Fran Monahan (who pushed for this five years ago), nearby resident Cindy Benson, and Richard Morse of Hollow Road have also endorsed this petition (along with just about everyone we speak to about this!).
County Public Works Commissioner Michael Murphy has initiated an engineering study on this-- but we can still politely let him know how we feel; sign on!

- I have seen cars on winter nights skid right through the westbound Hollow Rd stop sign -- a 4-way stop is a necessity at that intersection.

- I strongly support putting a four-way stop-sign at the intersection of Centre/Hollow/Clinton Hollow Roads. I will never forget the horrible night, nearly twenty-five years ago, when my high school friend's father, Jack Maser, died after his car was struck in an accident at that dangerous intersection. Jack left behind a wife, four children and many, many friends in Clinton Corners and Millbrook. We were all completely devastated by the loss of such a warm, decent, caring and amusingly irreverent person. What do I mean by amusingly irreverent? Well, as one example, I remember the life-sized poster of himself he hung as a reminder on the back of the door at the foot of the stairs where his two teen-aged sons had their bedrooms. It read, Turn out the *##!* lights! If Jack could send a message from beyond, maybe he would say, Put up the *##!* stop signs! Please do so, before others have to experience the kind of grief and loss Jacks family and friends had to live through.

- Many years ago my father had an accident at this intersection. The head injury he sustained was the locus of his fatal stroke 15 years later. Indirectly, that intersection caused his death. Personally, I know I'll hate to have to stop there every time I'm driving south or north, but we're all too much in a hurry, anyway.

- Four-way stop signs are the most sensible next step. We use this intersection frequently as well as the one to the north at Center Rd & Fiddlers Bridge which has four-way stop signs. It is our experience that drivers obey the four-way stop signs and are polite to fellow drivers when several are at the intersection. No flashing lights please!

- As 40-year residents of Clinton, we care about safety on its roads but also about appropriate signage to facilitate that safety. We think a 4-way stop sign is adequate for this intersection and request a public hearing to air both sides.

- As a real estate agent, I do a lot of driving in the northern half of the county and drive through this intersection fairly often. You really have to double check that someone isn't speeding along going north or south through the intersection. I have had a couple of close calls here and think a four- way stop would be an excellent idea.

- I agree with the premise of this petition. When entering this intersection from Hollow Rd (east or west), you cannot see traffic coming south on Centre Rd. I've had numerous close encounters as I've prepared to cross Centre Rd.

- The problem with the intersection is primarily high speed southbound Centre Road traffic. The bend in Centre Road, just north of Hollow, combined with the 50+mph southbound traffic make ANY crossing of Centre at Hollow dangerous. I cross this intersection 4 times daily, taking my kids to school, and am always extremely cautious, and even then southbound cars have caused a couple of close calls. A 4-way stop is the ONLY way to slow down the southbound Centre Road cars, and address this hazardous situation. We have a 4-way stop at Fiddler's Bridge and Centre. Put another one at Center and Hollow.

- Let's have a four-way stop at the intersection of Hollow and Center road rather than a blinking light. These are our streets, not highways. They need to be preserved as they are. Almost every time a highway engineer plans a so-called improvement, to move traffic faster for people passing through, he destroys the quality of life for local residents.

- I am against the placement of a blinking light at Centre/Hollow/Clinton Hollow roads. It destroys the beauty of the Clinton Hollow hamlet. It brings our town one step closer to becoming urbanized. And, the residents in the area will be greatly disturbed by the constant blinking lights during the night time hours. I don't know but I do not believe blinking lights are effective. But, by example, the blinking light on Rt 9 by Bard College does not slow traffic down through that intersection. Drivers, myself included, seem to drive at the same speed through that intersection. The problem with this intersection is there isn't a clear line of sight for the drivers waiting at the current Hollow Road stop signs. I want to see a 4 way stop placed at this intersection. It seems the most economical and least invasive way to solve this problem.

- A 4-way stop sign would be a far more effective solution to the problem. The only effect a blinking light will have is to detract from the beauty of the area and create an eyesore - especially for the local residents. Why not also designate CR18 as a 45MPH road?

- I don't understand why there has not been two-way communication between the County Highway Dept. and the citizens of Clinton. On the one hand, officials say they want citizens to be involved in preserving the character of their communities; on the other, when we ask for 4-way stop signs on Centre Road at the intersection with Hollow Rd. instead of a blinking light, there seems to be a condescending, silent, "we know best" response from the County. Please respond to the people of Clinton and please increase safety at the 18/14 intersection by installing 4-way stop signs and warning signs. Thank you.

- Only a four-way stop sign will ensure that every vehicle will stop at the intersection. A blinking light is needlessly expensive and not as effective! Now that the Taconic Parkway is less accessible, Centre Road is being used as a north/south highway. The only safe solution is a four-way stop at this intersection.
