Saving Oaky Woods and Ocmulgee WMA

Many outdoor stewards of Georgia see hunting and fishing as our heritage and realize that it is one of our most sought-after passions. Rightly so, we want to see this highly enjoyed recreational time continue on into the future Thank You for showing interest and concern in regards to the loss of hunting land here in the state of Georgia. We come to you today out of great concern and apprehension for the welfare of two Wildlife Management Areas; those being Oaky Woods and Ocmulgee WMAs. Weyerhaeuser announced on February 20 that their company will sell all of its timberland in Georgia, a total of more than 300,000 acres that stretches from Oconee to Worth counties. Almost all of this land was leased to hunting clubs, and two large tracts have been leased by the state for Ocmulgee and Oaky Woods WMAs. The state leases 15,519 acres of Weyerhaeuser land for Ocmulgee WMA, which makes up 54 percent of the area. At Oaky Woods WMA, 86 percent of the 18,875 total acres are Weyerhaeuser. To lose these hunting lands will be a crippling blow to the states hunting heritage, its hunters, and eventually will effect the states & surrounding counties hunting generated economy; due to the fact that hunters in our state find these two pieces of property to be some of the best sporting opportunities available. The thousands and thousands of dollars spent on licenses, gear, food, lodging, etc. are a direct result from them being able to enjoy either Oaky Woods and/or Ocmulgee WMA. As stewards of Georgias environment, a hunter, and a fisher, I urge the state of Georgia; its legislative bodies (the members therein), the state wildlife agencies, the effected county commissioners, and Weyerhaeuser to work diligently together to make possible for the acquisition of these tracts of land for the future enjoyment of Georgias sportsman. Your help in this process is GREATLY needed and desired!

    • As a voter, loss of hunting lands and over developement are one of my biggest concerns. Saving our hunting lands should be looked at as a priority. Millions of dollars in state revenues are accounted for by hunters and fisherman and the money they spend annually.

    • I have been hunting Ocmulgee for 15 years now and I have always hunted the same area. My son now hunts with me at Ocmulgee and enjoys it very much too. I have a grandson that is waiting his time when he will be hunting with us at Ocmulgee also. It would be a great loss for all the generations of the Floyd family to lose this WMA.

    • I am very concerned about this land being sold. I belive a few years ago when the increase was frist put on our hunting and fishing license that this was to buy the land and not lease it. But all this could be resolved if the state of Georgia would do something about the school tax that is put on the property owners. Everyone in the state should have to pay school taxes and not just the property owners. Take it off property owners and add one cent more onto the sales tax. That way the owners would not be selling all their land. I have suggested this to my Reps but to no avail. It seems that no one cares.

    • I have not heard one Georgia politician address the loss of WMAs. If a candidate I have not heard one candidate address this problem. These are not the only WMAs that are threatened. Election day is coming. If you don't vote,you don't count. The money is available to easily buy these properties for public use, but it will be spent in Atlanta on Marta or bike paths for the city folk.

    • This land is important to the people of Georgia. Not only the hunters but people that enjoy the outdoors and viewing wildlife in its natural habitat and not in a cage at some zoo. The state of Georgia would be doing their people a great injustice if they let this land go. My grandpa took my dad there.My dad took me. I take my kids and I would like to keep it around so they can take there kids and so on. The land has gave us alot so lets give back to the land and keep it like it is.

    • What drew me to Warner Robins and Houston County was the rural atmosphere. That has nearly disappeared. Since I have lived here I have paid property taxes for the schools and have not nor ever had children in this school system. Can't the State find money to purchase this property and retain it for the future wildlife education of the children?

    • This land is much to valuable to turn into a subdivision. This is the home of the entire middle Georgia black bear community. It is also one of very few wild areas left in middle Georgia. It is sad that the state can afford to support all the WMA areas in north Georgia and do nothing for the middle georgia area.

    • The preservation of our beautiful State's natural wildlife and habitats are vital to our State's future. Come on Governor and Legislators, don't be short-sighted. Preserve these lands, not just for hunters, but for all of our citizens. To allow development of these natural areas would be criminal!
