So, I get the news this morning when I woke up that we had lost another Canadian Soldier in Afghanistan. Trooper Karen Blais, 21 years old.
I go to the CBC & CTV links that someone had sent me and reading the comments made me sick to my stomach.

To read such things as :
antiNWO wrote: "Another stupid minion killed. Stop joining the army, it's a scam. There is no war on terror. The real terrorists are the Americans and every country who participates in the genocide of Arabs."
or
"What a waste of a beautiful young woman who should have her whole life ahead of her!
It truly angers me that our establishment and that of the United States (who manufactured this conflict in Afghanistan and Iraq) sends our young people to such armpits of the world to die in the name of Profit, Oil and Power! "
I understand we have free speech in this country but aren't these forums and comments moderated. Why not open up a forum on CBC's site for "Your opinion on Afghanistan" or something like that. The families and friends of our fallen soldiers should not have to read comments like this.
By signing the above petition you are asking CBC & CTV to moderate these comments and remove inappropriate comments on what should work as a condolence page for the families and friends of our military.
Sincerely,
The undersigned

- I have numerous friends who are mothers and fathers and loved ones of Canadian and American Soldiers. I'm pretty sure none of them would to log on to read an article about them and see "Another stupid minion" killed

- Former CF Member here, I would just like to point out that people will say "Free Speech" but if the comments had been reveresed when a Afghan had been killed and someone were to post something hateful against them, I'm sure it wouldn't even make the board. I've lost brothers in Afghanistan and I think this crosses the "Free Speech" Line

- People are entitled to voice their own opinion but they should have at the very least educated themselves on what they are talking about. The people who have made these atrocious comments should be ashamed of themselves, they have the ability to speak the way they do because of what these Amazing Men and Women have done and sacrificed for them. Im am proud to be a Military Wife and think that My Husband and his Military Brothers and Sisters are some of the most Dedicated, Honerable, fearless, and selfless individuals I have ever had the privilge to meet. I Support our Troops and all that They stand for. They have throught the years have given us so many freedoms that most of us take for granted. People that run their mouths with ignorant and hurtful defamitory comments have to understand that Our Soldiers have made a difference to the lives of the Afghan people, if they hear otherwise they are talking to the bad guys.

- Amazingly, when anybody leaves a racist comment about a Taliban terrorist, they are removed. But freedom of speech prevails when a comment is made about a Candian Soldier on a condelence page... The purpose of this site is to honor our fallen, not provide a place to post hateful messages.

- I am the widow of MCpl Jeffrey Walsh and I agree completely that individuals with words of absolute ignorance should not be allowed to post such painful words. I am with Dave that yes we have freedom of speech but there is a place for some of that freedom and it shouldn't be involved with comments below an article of an incredible soldier who just passed away. AGAIN FREEDOMS are NOT FREE I swear I don't understand how people can be so stupid...reallly how do they not get it???? Be ever so grateful for all of your frees and mind your mouths...

- Very few of the comments I've read are informed. Most are inflamatory and meant to incite readers. There is no benefit to them. Ignorant messages from ignorant people. I don't see how that is the kind of readership these outlets seek to attract...

- I agree with this completely. there is a time & place for opinions and newscasts of a fallen soldier is not he place for it especially when families are grieving in ceremonies that are completely public. I lost Thomas Hamilton in December '08 in Afghanistan and found that there were more than enough of these inappropriate comments. Definitely not what you want to read at a time like that or looking back through new articles after the fact.

- Nothing hurts more then seeing a fellow Canadian make such comments about our soldiers. It just shows how ungrateful and uninformed many people really are. My fiance was killed in Afghanistan not long ago and anytime I read anything like this it just breaks my heart even more. Our soldiers deserve our love, support and respect not these ignorant comments.

- I am the wife of Pte.John Curwin, KIA Afaghanistan Dec.13,2008. I am shocked that some people lack so much class. Be respectful, These are real people with real families, children of there own. your disresectful comments hurt. In some cases it's better that if you have nothing better to say, say nothing at all. I believe firmly in freedom of speech but what some fail to realize is that my husband along with the other 116 lives lost were ensuring this right for us. Just show some respect!
