We the undersigned consumers and business owners hereby petition the Better Business Bureau, interested politicians, and government officials to take the following course of action to rectify what we believe to be a travesty with great economic costs.

We believe the following statements to be true:

1. The Better Business Bureau current grading system is inaccurate, biased, and faulty which has caused legitimate, well run, consumer friendly businesses to suffer greatly from bad grades given to them by the Better Business Bureau.

2. The Better Business Bureau current grading system has not done the due diligence necessary to guarantee accurate results about non-member businesses for which it has given grades.

3. The Better Business Bureau has no mechanism in place for a non-member business to seek independent arbitration for what they deem to be an unfair grade. In other words, the Better Business Bureau refuses to subject itself to the very process that they require businesses to participate in if they wish to be members.

4. There is no standardization between regional offices of the Better Business Bureaus when it comes to grading or sales tactics. There is no appearance of oversight of these regional BBB offices by the national Council of Better Business Bureaus.

In view of these statements which we believe reflect the truth, we hereby request the Council of Better Business Bureaus take the following course of action to better serve the consumers it has sworn to protect and the businesses it seeks to represent, and make right the damage it has caused to businesses that have been disparaged by incorrect grades from various regional BBB offices.

1. Until such time as the Better Business Bureau can demonstrate that they have done the countless hours of research necessary to grade any business in their database, the BBB must be required to remove all grades assigned to non-member businesses.

2. Prior to re-instituting said grading system, the BBB must have a system in place to allow businesses and consumers to file complaints about a regional BBB. These complaints must go directly to the National Council of Better Business Bureaus to oversee, and if necessary arbitrate. If the Council of Better Business Bureaus declines to establish such a national oversight process, then we request legislation from the United States Congress to require the BBB to subject itself to such a national oversight process from whom-so-ever Congress decides.

    • BBB - Is running their business like the old days of mobsters. BBB is a scam in themself. Its funny how you can only file complaints and give them negative information on a company doing wrong but when a company is doing something write the BBB could care less and does not take any of that into consideration

    • I am President/CEO of a successful business. Less than 1\% of all of our clients since we have been open have filed BBB complaints, but they have us rated as an "F." Unless we do exactly what the consumer wants, even if we have a written agreement with other terms by which we are abiding, the BBB refuses to close the complaint in a way that is not detrimental to our grade with them. They are not helpful, dishonest and should not be allowed to hold their dominating thumb over businesses. How do you file a complaint against the BBB?

    • The BBB is no more than a high tech mob and is rotten to the core. They need to be investigated for what they really are. A modern day crime family! I have a story and documentation to prove it.

    • To have any semblance of fair play the BBB needs to (1) Publish names & contact information of accusers as well as company; (2) Judge merits of a complaint before asking company for a response dismiss frivolous complaints; (3) Investigate complaintant as well as the company; (4) Allow complimentary postings as well as complaints so readers can compare; (5) Evaluate facts of the companies response; (5) Judge the merits of the case & reach a conclusion; (6) Remove complaints from the record when BBB determines the company has acted legally; (7) Post ALL correspondence to the website - so readers can read & reach informed conclusions (8) Discontinue a grading system, especially one based on a secret algorithm; (9) Cease the sale of memberships to eliminate conflicts of interest. (10) Disclose BBB methods of operation, procedures & finance on its own website; (11) Allow companies to post complaints against the BBB; (12) Evaluate themselves using same procedure applied to companies.

    • The BBB is giving good companies a bad name merely by categorizing the industry they fall under. This is making it very difficult for consumers to distinguish the good apples from the bad. How can a firm with zero complaints truly have an "F" rating? This makes no sense at all and needs to change in order for the consumer to truly obtain unbiased, accurate information.

    • I filed a complaint against a company which was NOT resolved, the BBB listed it as resolved and REFUSED to change it. Also, the company I complained about became an accredited member AFTER I filed my complaint and even after my horrible experience and many copies of documents sent to the BBB, they have given the company an A+ rating! The BBB cannot be trusted to give accurate information to consumers who are trying to discover whether or not they can trust a business because it is obvious that we cannot trust the BBB to give us the truth.

    • Have spent over 30 years in the Tourist Business in Key Largo, Fl and never had 1 complaint to my knowledge I have become involved with a Company that has been maliciously attacked many times over, because of false accusations made by indivuduals that thought no work was involved to become successful. The indivuduals misreprensented what they were told and the Chamber obviously never waited until there was proof of wrong doing on the Company I am involved with.
