We the undersigned consumers and business owners hereby petition the Better Business Bureau, interested politicians, and government officials to take the following course of action to rectify what we believe to be a travesty with great economic costs.
We believe the following statements to be true:
1. The Better Business Bureau current grading system is inaccurate, biased, and faulty which has caused legitimate, well run, consumer friendly businesses to suffer greatly from bad grades given to them by the Better Business Bureau.
2. The Better Business Bureau current grading system has not done the due diligence necessary to guarantee accurate results about non-member businesses for which it has given grades.
3. The Better Business Bureau has no mechanism in place for a non-member business to seek independent arbitration for what they deem to be an unfair grade. In other words, the Better Business Bureau refuses to subject itself to the very process that they require businesses to participate in if they wish to be members.
4. There is no standardization between regional offices of the Better Business Bureaus when it comes to grading or sales tactics. There is no appearance of oversight of these regional BBB offices by the national Council of Better Business Bureaus.
In view of these statements which we believe reflect the truth, we hereby request the Council of Better Business Bureaus take the following course of action to better serve the consumers it has sworn to protect and the businesses it seeks to represent, and make right the damage it has caused to businesses that have been disparaged by incorrect grades from various regional BBB offices.
1. Until such time as the Better Business Bureau can demonstrate that they have done the countless hours of research necessary to grade any business in their database, the BBB must be required to remove all grades assigned to non-member businesses.
2. Prior to re-instituting said grading system, the BBB must have a system in place to allow businesses and consumers to file complaints about a regional BBB. These complaints must go directly to the National Council of Better Business Bureaus to oversee, and if necessary arbitrate. If the Council of Better Business Bureaus declines to establish such a national oversight process, then we request legislation from the United States Congress to require the BBB to subject itself to such a national oversight process from whom-so-ever Congress decides.

- Perhaps BBB Presidents (Bill Mitchell - Southland BBB and Springboard) shouldn't be allowed to serve on the Board of Directors for companies that it ranks. Even better, they shouldn't unequivocally give that companies competitors an F.

- We are not members of the BBB, they have now given us an F rating. We only have 4 complaints. We have currently clients that are concerned and have lost potential clients due to this rating. They are causing us to lose business. We are a small business that cannot afford to lose business. Why should we be forced to join the BBB. Why should they be allowed to rate our company?

- Here in Denver the BBB told us to get an A rating we had to pay them $480. All the BBB is interested in is negative complaints and is not interesed in providing postive reviews. One final irony: if you have a complaint against the Better Business Bureau, you can't file it with the Better Business Bureau. The Better Business Bureau is not a member of its own organization. The BBB does not report on themselves and does not disclose any finical information. In the BBB own words: "Information in this BBB Reliability Report is believed reliable, but not guaranteed as to accuracy." This is not trust you can believe in!

- Hello, my name is Joseph Rietdorf. I have been just ripped off not only from a local business, but from the consumer advocacy group that supposedly holds them responsible. II looked for a reputable painter and have always thought that one that is "BBB Accredited "would be one of the best places to start. I went to the BBB of Northern Indiana Website and found Chuck's Painting with an A+ Rating. After paying this painter the full $2250.00 we agreed on to paint my house, he absolutely destroyed my wood siding with his pressure washer. After months of trying to get him to fix it (and helping him the best I could by spending more of my own money and hours of sanding) to no avail, I decided to file a complaint with the BBB. I was dead set on taking Chuck's Painting to small claims court until the BBB offered me their "arbitration process." They said that they were out for the best interest of both parties and would be unbiased in their decision and that it would be final. I knew that I had an "open & shut" case b

- They have put unjustified complaints of clients I never had or never pay me any money I got proof and told them and respond accordingly to the bbb standards, yet still they gave the reason to those people who meanfuly malign my business. I never got a hold of the bbb and they never bother to confirm if these allegations were even true and back up by proof on the complaint side. This rating and complaints they post on their website is affecting my business greatly speciall now days with this economy!! The goverment should do something to protect small business owners who work so hard to make a living from such malign complaints, I do agree to post a bad raiting when the business deserve it, and bbb investigate every single side with facts not just words.
