Stop the cuts at Radio Foyle

We, the undersigned, object in the strongest possible terms to the BBCs proposed cuts to Radio Foyles programmes and staff. As a local public service broadcaster, the station is uniquely placed to reflect the affairs of the north west. The proposed cuts (the News At One, Sean Coyle, 3-5Live, Saturday Sport and Saturday Club) raise serious doubts over the BBCs commitment to local broadcasting and the future of the station. A reduction in Radio Foyles dedicated output disenfranchises licence fee payers here. We call on the BBC to withdraw the planned cuts at Radio Foyle and to safeguard and invest in the service instead.

    • I'm a contributor to Mark's show, but would be petitioning even if this were not the case. Avoid creeping Belfast-centeredness!

    • It would be a total disaster for me if the published programmes were axed. As a retired person who listens to Sean Coyle and Mark Patterson every day, I depend on these shows for both entertainment and hard-hitting local news stories of interest. On Saturdays the Eamon Friel show is a wonderful adventure into the world of music. Each of these presenters are of the highest calibre and present their shows with the highest degree of professionalism, integrity and inclusiveness. They appeal to all sections of our community in the North West and are indeed a refreshing addition to the wellbeing of all of their listeners. Axing these programmes will turn people away from the BBC towards alternative local channels.

    • Since its establishment in 1975, Radio Foyle has made a contribution to the life of this community out of proportion to the level of investment put into its establishment. Radio, compared to television, is not an expensive medium and its hard to understand how the small savings to be made in these cuts can be justified in the face of the great damage to the morale of the Derry-based broadcasting community they will cause.
