We, the Undersigned, request Research in Motion (makers of the BlackBerry handheld device) to modify their BlackBerry Internet Service to allow two-way synchronization for users of non-Microsoft Exchange e-mail accounts that utilize the IMAP protocol.

The current configuration supported on BlackBerry Internet Service version 2.2 only allows for downloading of new mail and one-way synchronization from the BlackBerry handheld back to the IMAP server while no synchronization from the IMAP server back to the BlackBerry device is available. This interrupts one of the key characteristics and advantages of using the IMAP protocol: multiple devices with a consistent view of the mail account. For example, upon receiving a new e-mail on a non-BlackBerry device and opening it, effectively changing the message's status from "unread" to "read," the "read" status should be replicated to all other devices connected to the IMAP account; however, under the current configuration, this change is not reflected on the BlackBerry handheld, leaving all devices except the BlackBerry handheld with an accurate view of the mail account. This ultimately leaves the BlackBerry Internet Service little more than a mail downloader.

The Undersigned understands that the upgraded service BlackBerry Enterprise Server allows for this feature and others; however, it is only compatible with a few e-mail systems that are intended for large corporations, not individual power users. Additionally, we are not requesting the other features of BlackBerry Enterprise Server, such as calendar synchronization, access to folder structures, or PUSH capabilities. As convenient as those other features would be, the Undersigned have no desire to negatively impact Research in Motion's sales of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server; we seek only the full capabilities of the IMAP protocol within the context of the BlackBerry Internet Service, as Research in Motion has advertised support for.

    • this was the primary reason for getting the blackberry, somewhat of a disappointment. Especially since many of the other phones I was looking at support it.
