In signing this petition I ask that you repeal Bill 20, section 15, part 6, passed in the legislature on November 18. This section of the bill removes the legislated requirement in the Community Living Authority Act that people with developmental disabilities and their family members are represented on the Board of Directors of Community Living BC (CLBC), the Crown Agency that administers supports and services to people with developmental disabilities.
I believe that:
- People with developmental disabilities and their families have the right to make decisions that affect their lives.
- People with developmental disabilities and their families are the experts in their own lives.
- Representation on the CLBC Board by the people it serves is key to improving its leadership, stewardship and direction.
- Having representation on a non-decision making advisory committee is not enough.
- This action by your government is a betrayal of the principles on which CLBC was founded.
People with developmental disabilities and families must be guaranteed through legislation a place on the CLBC Board of Directors.
We ask that you repeal the changes made to the Community Living Authority Act.

- this move on the part of government is not only a betrayal of the terms set out when CLBC was formed but it puts at question government's respect for people with disabilities and their families. Shameful really.

- As a parent of a child with a disability, discrimination is a part of daily life. You CANNOT understand what we go through unless you've lived this. We need someone there with first hand knowledge. The further this issue is depersonalized the easier it is to rationalize ignorance and the more these individuals will be victimized by the system.

- People with disabilities and their families must have the right to make decisions which directly affect them. They have spent far too many years having decisions made by "the experts" .

- Yet again, the BC government betrays the community consultation process that it committed to during the formation of CLBC. It's not too late - repeal the legislation changes!

- interesting that the government that put the legislation in place, repeals it. How can we justify the hours and the trust we put into supporting the Government in forming legislation that reflects the wishes of individuals and their families to have the government go back on its word. Premier Gordon Campbell should change the legislation back to representation from individuals and families.

- I can't help but think that as Ministers and ministries responsible for CLBC change, the significance of having certain people guaranteed spots on the Board and the emotion and commitment that were invested in crafting a body that people with disabilities and those who support them could feel comfortable with has been lost. Having sat at the coalition table for many meetings, I understand that many people feel betrayed, but the government doesn't. They have lost that connection and see this decision as a way to rationalise some process or make something more efficient. I hope this petition wakes up those in power to the significance of promises made and accepted in good faith.
