We, as members of the Fordham Law School community, are writing in support of Supreme Court Justice Stephen G. Breyer as the recipient of this year's Stein Prize. Justice Breyer has served our country and the legal world honorably for 44 years and personifies the qualities sought in a candidate for the Stein Prize. The award is to be bestowed on "individuals whose work exemplifies outstanding standards of professional conduct, promotes the advancement of justice and brings credit to the profession." We are particularly dismayed to see political forces entering this distinctly independent arena. Our beloved law school demands we see complex problems for their legal merit and not for their partisan value. We urge you to join us in recognizing Justice Breyer for his invaluable legal service, regardless of his political beliefs.

    • Justice Breyer has continually fought to protect the underprivileged and those without power. He wholly deserves this award.

    • It is very sad to see the church, of which I am a member, attempt to politicize this matter
