The Petition of supporters of the SOS Liverpool Plains Inc brings to the attention of the House our serious concerns with the NSW Governments refusal to put the interests of residents and the environment affected by coal mining and coal seam gas extraction. In the era of climate change, we must ensure mining does not destroy our environment, agricultural production, peoples livelihoods, health and attachment to the land.
The undersigned petitioners therefore ask the Legislative Assembly to:
1. Amend the Mining Act 1992 and the Petroleum (onshore) Act 1991 to exclude all mining activities within 1 km from a watercourse.
2. Recognise the significant contribution of the Liverpool Plains to food production in New South Wales by cancelling all mining and gas exploration licences on this prime agricultural land and quarantining it from any future mining.
3. Immediately implement a mandatory requirement for coal trains to cover their load and for all coal mines to monitor dust emissions to PM2.5 with non-compliance and excessive emissions resulting in significant fines and shut down in production.
* Coal dust has been shown to cause or exacerbate a wide range of illnesses and to contaminate tank water with heavy metals and other toxic substances

- I implore all levels of government to implement objective, transparent and honest Triple Bottom Line assessment of the implications of any application to explore or mine for coal and coal seam gas, including the greenhouse effects of burning the coal and coal seam gas. You MUST ensure the environmental and social costs are truly and transparently valued. This must include effective, transparent and honest commitment to the principles of Ecologically Sustainable Development, in particular inter-generational equity.

- The government should also be controlling as to who owns the mines and if damage occurs who will be responsible. I will be holding responsible the State Government as the reality of chasing the Communist Chinese government will be futile. Please all of you start to consider the consequences of foreign ownership of our food source or its inevitable contamination.

- With the apparent demise of the lower Murray Darling food basin , preserving the Liverpool Plains as a food basin is vital.

- These items are just common sense, as well as responsible stewardship for nature and humanity. Why do regulators have an unwavering history of dismissing their rights and responsibilities to both nature and humanity - always bent by the dollar and short term economic exploitation. Please show some real leadership and heart.

- I have visited the Liverpool Plains area and have friends and relatives in the region. It is currently a beautiful and productive area that will be damaged in so many different ways, particularly the water systems above an under ground if this mining goes ahead. Once done it can't be undone. Please do all you can to stop this mining or at the very least, to limit the damage it does to the environment and it's population, human. and it's flora and fauna.

- This is crucial for Australia's water and food security. No government should let this land be mined especially when there is an abundance of brown coal throughout Australia and only a small percentage of ariable and extremely fertile land in Australia. We need politicans who are leaders and will leave future generations in a better position than we are now.

- The Bad Guy in the James Bond movie didn't last long when all he had to drink was engine oil. If you haven't got food to eat then you can't go mining... elsewhere... can you! Don't be fools... stop thinking about money, slow down and get smarter! It's a Win, Win situation!
