We ask that the Canadian Internet Registry Authority (CIRA) designate differences between business and non-business URLs through the process by which they permit websites to have the dot-ca domain name registration.
For example, in the United States of America business websites end in dot-com while government agencies end in dot-gov. In the United Kingdom business websites end in dot-co-dot-uk while government departments end in dot-gov-dot-uk. There is no difference in the domain name registration for Canada so all websites, businesses and government departments, end in dot-ca.
Not only is this confusing for Internet users but we believe it to be irresponsible and must be rectified.

- I trust that CIRA will take this issue seriously and make the changes necessary to distinguish between business and non-business URLs. Thank you.

- as a librarian, it is very difficult to teach about web resources and we need to have some accountability to help students learn to evaluate their resources

- I teach a course on Information Literacy & research skills, and we dedicate an entire lecture to explaining the differences between web domain names. I tell the students they can be fairly certain of the quality/control/bias/intent of the information presented on a website based on weather it ends in .com . gov .org .edu .net, etc. These domain name identifiers are an important aspect of website identification, and are imperative in the research process.

- As a college Reference librarian, I daily see how distinguishing commercial from academic and government Web sites makes it easier for students (and my wife!) to find the information they need. In fact, having a separate extension for business makes it easier to find commercial products one is looking for. The typical approach to searching, including how people use Google, is not conducive to finding specific information, and the results can be overwhelming. Thank you for considering this important change. I have always admired how Canadian universities and colleges have pioneered many innovations on the Web. This would help their work be known better, as well.

- I strongly endorse this suggestion. This is the first step that I use in the evaluation process -- i.e. read the URL. However, this step is almost useless for Canadian sites. We can only determine that it is Canadian but nothing else.
