We declare our support for the Department of Classics and Philosophy at Royal Holloway, University of London and our opposition to the severe reductions in staff and student numbers proposed by the College. We call on the Principal and the College Council to reconsider these proposals.

- Classics is more than just history, it's language, philosophy and literature too, to divide it is to kill it and add to the destruction of Classics in the UK at a time when it is growing increasingly popular.

- I very much hope that Royal Holloway will take advice on this issue from the management of the University of Leeds, who have now recognised the popularity of Classics as a subject, and the value which it can provide to the University. Our colleagues at Royal Holloway are leading scholars in their field, and I can only wish them the very best of luck in making the case for the retention of their excellent department.

- It would be terrible for such a prestigous department to be lost. Dissolution of this establishment will have repercussions throughout the entire Classics sphere.

- Classical languages are as relevant now as they ever were to the study of civilization and indeed modern linguistics. Latin and Greek are not dead merely dying due to a disregard for the past for the sake of "moving forward". I am deeply disappointed that The Powers That Be have chosen to subscribe to this "progressive" mentality.

- A classics department, and indeed a history one, is laughable without the highest level of ancient language teaching.

- It is quite appalling that these decisions should be rushed before seeing how the new fees arrangement beds down - Classics may well prove more resilient than most, as it's not a subject that people drift into anyway - and without any relation to the nationwide, or even London-wide, subject provision.
