** Stop Cancellation of existing Bus routes to Canyon Vista Middle School **

This is a serious issue that affects every home owner on the Mountain, Great Hills Reserve and the neighborhoods adjacent to Yaupon Drive.
Our primary concern is for the safety and security of our children.
. Our kids will be walking on very narrow sidewalks adjacent to winding roads. Check out - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVXokX9uDmk
. Area topology, which includes hills and valleys, makes it impossible for kids to do 4 mile of hiking ( not walking ) TWICE every day to and from school. Check out the Topology here - http://tinyurl.com/bg3n67
. Besides heavy books in their backpack, kids are carrying music instruments, lunch boxes, folders etc. So biking to school is ruled out as a viable option.
. There is just one traffic signal ( near CVMS ) across heavy congested Spicewood Springs Road. Imagine having hundred of kids trying to cross this road at this traffic light on foot twice every day.
. It will lead to enormous Traffic Congestion around CVMS if parents are forced to drop off and pick up kids. It currently takes upto 45 minutes to just enter and drop off/ pick up kids. If bus routes are eliminated, then these wait time can easily climb to 1 hr and 15 minutes - for each trip to school. This will only add to the pollution and adversely impact the health of students and their teachers as they wait outside for the kids to be picked up.
Entry and Exit for CVMS opens on Spicewood Springs Road. There is no way to re-route traffic to CVMS.
. Elimination of bus routes will have an adverse effect on the property value for every home in the area. So what RRISD might hope to gain by eliminating bus routes will be lost with lower tax revenues.
If RRISD eliminates these bus routes inspite of safety concerns for our children walking to school, it will be difficult for families living in the impacted area to vote FOR any RRISD bond issue in future.

    • It's not just safer for the children. It's safer for the drivers who have to drive down Spicewood Springs. There will be a lot of accidents with the number of parents stopping their cars on the street to let out their kids. They do it now even with the busses. In addition, the single intersection is so small, it can never handle the pedestrian traffic.

    • This decision should never have made it this far, if at all. The committee members who put this forward and the board members that accepted it need to resign their positions. It is obvious that our children are NOT their priority!!!
